Next Meeting in June Members of the AFS Aluminum Div. 2 awarded a set of hand-painted aluminum cast bookends to Steve Kuipers, applied technology teacher, Schaumburg High School, Schaumburg, Ill., for his dedication in teaching metalcasting to the next generation. T e presentation was part of the tech- nical division’s participation in the school’s career day. During the day, Div. 2 members gave talks on careers in metalcasting to engineering students T e applied technology department at Schaumburg High


School has a fully operating metalcasting facilty that allows students to gain awareness of metalcasting and actually pro- duce aluminum sand castings. Aluminum patterns provided to the high school were made by Lee Tuttle, professor at Kettering Univ.. T e AFS Aluminum Div. 2 has been active in the past


year with outreach events and research projects, including E357 alloy standardization, a 206/535 hot tearing study and development of a new permanent test bar mold. T e division’s next meeting will be June 17 at AFS head-


quarters in Schaumburg, Ill. Adam Kopper, metallurgical engineer at Mercury Marine will give a presentation on alloy development. T ose interested in learning, advancing their careers and promoting the industry are invited and encour- aged to attend. New Engineering Committees


Gain Traction Two of the three newly-restructured AFS Engineering


Div. 1 committees will be co-hosting a meeting and plant tour June 3 at John Deere Foundry and the Iowa Ad- vanced Manufacturing Center in Waterloo, Iowa. T e Design and Development Committee was formed in 2013 to bring casting designers, buyers and producers togeth- er to collaborate on new technology in an eff ort to optimize casting design and development from initial concept to fi rst article validation with minimal time and cost. The Process and Systems Improvement Committee has been set up to equip metalcasting facilities with an understanding of quality, business and manufacturing principles that will help companies continually improve and optimize business practices. June’s meeting will include presentations on casting

process simulation in design and sourcing, 3D sand mold and core printing, and the John Deere Foundry, followed by a plant tour and tour of the Iowa Advanced Manufac- turing Center. The committees are open to new members. For more
