• The part replaced a 34-piece weldment to improve ease of manufacturing while holding up to the rigors of continuous mine operation where the hub rotates at 3,600 rpms. The cast design saved the customer $76,000 in the first year, reducing costs on the component by more than 50%.


• The project brought 18,000 lbs. of cast iron production to the industry, and the customer has identified two more hubs to convert into castings.

Material: 4140 steel. Process: Investment casting. Weight: 1.9 lbs. Dimensions: 3.65 x 2.94 x 2.15 in. Application: Knife blade holder for a thresher.


• By converting to investment casting from fabrication, the customer realized a 25% cost reduction and was able to eliminate post-fabrication machining activities.


• The cast part exhibited improved dimensional stability, eliminating the need for a secondary straight- ening process, saving the customer additional time and cost.
