SINCE 1916 THE VANCOUVER POLICE DEPT. HAS RECOGNIZED THE ADVANTAGES OF USING MOTORCYCLES IN A CITY ENVIRONMENT.

the years were gathered from the Vancouver Police Museum and Vancouver City Archives. In the end, 26 different photos were chosen, each capturing the history and evolution of the VPD motor officer. One of the photos shows

the VPD’s drill team riding in formation. The drill team was created in 1954 by Sgt. “Cookie” Ryan and the team was initially involved in acro- batic riding. Today, during parade performances, the drill team thrills audiences with high-speed maneuvers that demonstrate riding skills and machine capabilities. Outside of parade performances, the drill team is also involved in community service and char- ity fundraising events. On a national level, the VPD’s drill team is recognized as one of Canada’s top escort units. The drill team has escorted prime ministers, presidents and other dignitaries from around the world, and has received praise from security services world- wide for its professionalism and efficiency. 2014 marks the drill team’s 60th

anniversary.

The team enters the future with modern equipment while remembering the people and accomplishments of its past.
