of a presidential visit. There are no cer- emonial police motorcycles in an escort since every motor offi cer has a specifi c duty, assignment and responsibility. The classroom portion was presented
by police motorcycle training instructors from the Florida Highway Patrol-Troop D, Orange County Sheriff’s Offi ce and Orlando Police Department, outlining the unique duties, responsibilities and requirements of the police motorcycles involved in a PPD. The training identi- fi ed procedures for clearing intersections, threat evaluations and assessments, motorcycle formations and positioning, passing procedures, radio communica- tions, and most importantly, safe opera- tion of the motorcycles during the escort. The training identifi ed the specifi c duties and responsibilities of the “Zero Bike” and the motor offi cer. Details of the “Zero Bike” briefi ng include the route, radio channel, emergency alternative plans and motor officer assignments. Upon completion of the escort, a debriefi ng is held with the motor offi cers that were involved in the escort. During the field portion of the PPD
training, seven simulated escorts were practiced on preplanned routes, consist- ing of more than 220 miles ridden by the attendees. Details covered in the classroom training were utilized, with different motor offi cers alternating command of the seven practice escorts. Every practice escort was critically debriefed and discussed. The importance of riding the route prior to an escort was specifi cally identifi ed during one of the practice escorts. Though this training was specifi c to
presidential escorts, the fundamentals learned and practiced by the attendees are applied to the proficient and safe execution of other routine escorts to include funerals, celebrities, dignitaries and other VIPs, as well as regular duty operation of the police motorcycle. The training was a great success and brought a tremendous learning experience to the motorcycle offi cers in attendance. Many contacts and new friendships were estab- lished, and the goals of the training were accomplished.
