ELCA GLOBAL MISSION/Y. FRANKLIN ISHIDA
Founding member of ELCA dies
L
loyd Svendsbye, 83, a mem- ber of the Commission for a New Lutheran Church that
formed the ELCA, died March 2. As president of Luther Theologi- cal Seminary and Northwestern Lutheran Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minn., he also led in the merger that formed Luther Seminary. “Dr. Svendsbye was deeply
committed to greater Lutheran unity,” said Lowell Almen, former ELCA secretary. “As [he said] … ‘Lutheran unity is not simply an argument about advantages to be won or positions to be protected in negotiations. It is an article of faith, rooted in Scripture, and proclaimed in the creeds and confessions of our church. ... If we use our reason wisely, we can create a structure that elimi- nates unnecessary duplication and competition [between and among churches] to let our wit- ness to the gospel be seen more clearly in the world.’ ” Svendsbye’s career included
chair of the religion department at Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn.; editor-in-chief of Augs- burg Publishing House, Minne- apolis; academic dean of St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn.; and president of Augustana College, Sioux Falls, S.D. He also served as the last
vice president of the American Lutheran Church, an ELCA pre- decessor. (See also page 45).
New ELCA companions in India The ELCA entered into a formal companion relationship with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Madhya Pradesh, the latter’s fi rst church-to-church relationship. Established in 1923 after work by the Swedish Evangelical Mission, the 200,000-member ELCMP serves swathes of rural central India. Ministries include a college, more than 24 schools, fi ve hospitals and other social service institutions. “We have always worked among the marginalized and oppressed in the region, espe- cially among tribal peoples,” said ELCMP Bishop Emmanuel Panchoo (center, shown with unidenti- fi ed medical personnel). Y. Franklin Ishida, ELCA program director for Asia, called it “a formal start for [relationships] that have been going on for some time now,” particularly with connections to the ELCMP’s Padhar Hospital.
