Over the past seven yearsmajor players in both the public and private sector of the American cleaningmarket have turned to amanagement systemthat has become some- thing of a game changer for future business. The ISSA’s Cleaning IndustryManagement Standard (CIMS) has been adopted as a requirement for cleaning service suppliers by intelligent clients, to ensure that themanagement and monitoring of the cleaning of their premises is in line with best cleaning industry business practices. There are now many companies, including ‘in-house’ organistations, who have applied for and completed the certification. After identifying that there is a genuine need for a similar
recognised ‘standard’ in the UK, Europe and theMiddle East, ISSA and BICSc Business Services (BBS) have worked together to start to deliver CIMS to thesemarkets. CIMS is a brand in its own right and is controlled andmaintained by the ISSA. BBS is providing the delivery of audits and support outside of the USA. Many of the global cleaning suppliers are already commit-
ted to CIMS and will be able to respond to clients who are insisting that CIMS certification is a prerequisite for future global and regional tenders. SMEs can also benefit fromCIMS certification as it is
based on the provision and adherence to standard business systems and practices and is achievable for all who want to show how professional the cleaning industry can be and how efficient a well run and organised business is. Unlikemany ‘off the shelf’monitoring systems requiring
external ongoing expensive validation, CIMS describes the procedures and principles to be considered in implementing qualitymanagement programmes for cleaning organisa- tions and allows you to adapt and adopt your existing sys- tems, including ISO 9001, tomeet the requirements of the standard. What are themajor differences between CIMS and other
accreditations? • Cleaning industry specific. • Facilities are audited as well as the company systems and processes. • The auditors are fromthe cleaning industry! The first wave CIMS qualified Industry Certificate Experts
(ICE) can help and advise in-house and private sector com- panies. They have now completed training and are able to support companies up to their first audit and beyond. There are also four qualified and approved auditors based in Eu- rope who can undertake the company/facility audits every two years. The initial certification looks at best practice and the five
management principles, themain elements of which are: • Quality systems. • Service delivery. • Human resources. • Health and safety. • Environment andmanagement commitment. These are incorporated in to the organisation with focus
on nominated buildings. Later this year, a sixth element will be available - green
building accreditation. All following audits review how the best practices have
been implemented throughout the company and improved over the previous two years.Whilst an individual company holds the certification, there is a requirement for a number of facilities operated by the company to be accredited to maintain certification.
