Longer daylight hours, cro- cuses starting to sprout and even the sighting of insects mean the spring equinox is almost upon us. Although the winter was relatively mild, the storms and flood- ing caused chaos and misery for thousands and put a dent in the still fragile economy. But spring always brings a
sense of optimism and this year is no different, with the
Cleaning Show makes its London debut at the Excel Centre and I’m pleased to say the move to the capital has been met with huge sup- port from sponsors and ex- hibitors alike. Mitie is on-board as the main spon- sor and we’re expecting visi- tor numbers to be extremely healthy, with people able to enjoy the Cleaning Show as well as exploring one of the most vibrant cities in the world. London is recognised as a
truly global city and this has been enormously helpful in opening up the event to the European market, and in- deed the European Federa- tion of Cleaning Industries (EFCI) has now decided to hold its board meeting in the

capital during the show. So this year we’re expecting manymore visitors fromthe continent and this, again, is one of the reasons we felt themove to London was so necessary. A successful Cleaning
Show is beneficial to the in- dustry in general, as any profits the BCC receives fromthe show are ploughed back in to help fund new ini- tiatives. Each year we’re able to offer four grants of up to £10,000 to fund projects that can better the industry, and last year we were proud to make awards to the British Toilet Association for its toilet app, and the Federation of Window Cleaners for a new safety scheme. But it’s an exciting time at
the Council inmany other respects. The BCC is, of course, the voice of the cleaning industry, and we now expect that voice to be a little louder with the appoint- ment of Lee Baker as our newmedia and policyman- ager. Lee is a trained jour- nalist and has spent a number of years at the BBC
in local and national radio, in addition to stints in public re- lations and digitalmedia. Lee will use all hismedia ex- perience tomake sure the Council’s views are heard in the trade press andmain- streammedia and tomain- tain the BCC as themost authoritative voice in the in- dustry. Themembership has been
steadily growing through the years, but there is a slight change taking place this spring as we lose two long- standingmembers, but gain one fantastic new one! As many of you will know Asset Skills and CSSA are joining forces and so will leave the
Profits from The Cleaning Show, co-owned by the BCC and Quartz Business Media, are poured back into the grants programme - another reason to support the show and its move to London in 2015.

Council as individualmem- bers. But the newly formed company - The Building Fu- tures Group - will be apply- ing to join the BCC at the earliest opportunity and I look forward to welcoming it into the fold at the next Councilmeeting. So as we leap into spring
there really is plenty to look forward to at the BCC. Our membership, whose full de- tails can be found on Page 38 of this issue, is as strong as ever, our voice is still loud and influential, and we look forward to a good conference later this year, and our best ever Cleaning Show next year.
