Show Review
parkworld-online.com Sun shines on RAAPA
Participants at this year’s “Amusement Rides and Entertainment Equipment” Expo from the Russian Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (RAAPA) probably wished they were outside rather than indoors at Moscow's All-Russian Exhibition Center (VVTs). Held from 12 to 14 March, it was uncharacteristically warm and sunny and in the Russian capital during the period
N
o matter, the almost 1,000 industry representatives that attended were there to do business. As well as the trade show, which featured the products and services of 220 exhibitors from 26 countries, the event also featured a full conference programme, awards ceremony, networking opportunities and a visit to a local family entertainment centre – cementing its reputation as the key industry get- together for parks and attractions operators from across Eastern Europe. Play equipment and children’s rides attractions are always well represented here, and two newcomers included the kiddie train manufacturers Fun Express and Kids Train. Those looking for larger rides could discover products varied as the large Ferris Wheels offered by Pax, the latest rides from various well-known Italian names, or even a converted excavator functioning as an amusement ride courtesy of Stroitelnye Attraktsiony. There was a notable increase in the number of companies offering arcade games for family entertainment centres. Less evident on this occasion were suppliers of ‘5D’ equipment and interactive cinemas, a sign perhaps that such attractions are waning in popularity. Eastern European Company, which had constructed a cave as a demonstration of its theming capabilities, received a lot of interest in its dark ride technology and effects. The Ukrainian company also exhibited models of three entire theme parks it is working on. Play provider Italpark,
meanwhile, caught the eye with a large castle structure. Recognised as contributing one of the most booths was Polin Waterparks & Pool Systems from Turkey.
Around 300 professionals attended the supporting conference, where one of the most popular sessions was entitled, “City Amusement Park of the 21st Century as a main place for recreation and entertainment”. Two round table sessions were held, devoted to “virtual attractions” and the safety of waterparks. A new initiative this year was the business breakfast, where guests could discuss over various operational matters, and hopefully start the day feeling both well fed and inspired. A visit was paid to the one of Moscow's many FECs, Cosmic, developed by Brunswick/KidsPlay, representatives from whom were on hand to discuss its food and beverage operations, after which attendees got stuck into a “fiery bowling tournament” and a banquet. Meanwhile the Cosmos hotel across from the VVTs was used as the venue for Wednesday night’s Golden Pony Awards presented by the Italian publisher Facto Edizioni. The 17th annual RAAPA Expo is confirmed for 11 to 13 March 2015, but first a smaller autumn exhibition will be held at the VVTs (same venue, different hall) from 15 to 17 October.
