Sharjah’s Al Jazeera Park has been a popular recreation spot for Emirati families for the past three decades. And now, thanks to a DHS100 million ($27m/€20m) upgrade from the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), it has even more to offer visitors

Sharjah shines

Al Montazah is Sharjah’s first waterpark, but the Emirate boasts several other family-friendly activities. FEC fans can enjoy the 20 rides and attractions on offer at Adventureland on the first floor of the Sahara shopping mall. Opening soon will be the facility’s third rollercoaster, a jungle-themed MotoCoaster from Zamperla. At the Al

Waterfront, a popular social hub dominated by a large plaza and a splendid mosque, Shurooq recently added a new area for children in addition to a spectacular fountain show (pictured), splash park, mini golf and new international restaurants and cafés.

Visitors to Sharjah can also check out the 60m-tall Eye of the Emirates (by Dutch Wheels/ Vekoma) at the canal-side Al Qasba mall, currently one of the tallest observation wheels in the United Arab Emirates.

waterpark. Located just a short drive from Dubai, families come here to enjoy a more simple, relaxed – and cheaper – form of entertainment than that often found in the neighbouring Emirate. As well as the waterpark, the venue is also home to a mosque, various sporting facilities, a go-kart track, picnic areas, a small amusement park, lake and abundant green spaces, all set against the backdrop of the Sharjah skyline.

WhiteWater, whose previous credits include the Wild Wadi and Aquaventure waterparks in Dubai, Ibn Battuta shopping mall and Sharjah Aquarium, the new Al Montazah waterpark opened in March and boasts eight slides (four body slides, four tube slides). The tallest of these is 15m (almost 50ft), and there’s also a large water playground to enjoy in addition to the pool facilities. There to greet guests is a family

of mascots including Shahad the bee, Meymun the monkey, Mahir the frog and Liblib, a parrot. The new revitalised park is expected to receive more than 1 million visitors in its first year, eventually increasing to 3 million, says Shurooq chairwoman Sheikha Bodour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi. “Upon completion, Al Montazah Park will become a competitive regional tourist destination in terms of quality, design, amenities and services that will richly add to Sharjah’s and the UAE’s tourist landmarks and enhance the country’s presence on the tourist map,” she says.

Open to the public daily from 10am to 11pm or as late as 1am at weekends, entry to the park is DHS10 ($2.70/€2.00), free for children under 0.8m. Waterpark entry is priced at DHS120 ($32.70/€23.70) for adults and DHS75 ($20.40/€14.80) for children, inclusive of Al Montazah Park admission.
