rang utans and beaches, delicious food and heavenly spas. T e magic just went on for
James Underdown, Kuoni Store Manager and Shangri-La Ambassador...
FIRST IMPRESSIONS Approximately an hour aſt er landing on the tropical island of Borneo, we arrived at our home for the next few nights – Shangri- La’s Rasa Ria Resort. We checked in to the hotel’s newly refurbished garden wing, where we had a very spacious room with stunning views across the South China Sea, and the swimming pool, but before I could swim there was lots to explore.
PLENTY TO EXPLORE We jumped on bicycles to discover the local area with a guide from the hotel. Of the many routes available, we opted for a 4km cycle ride to Terayong Village, where we stopped at a village house for local sweets and coff ee. And the adventures didn’t end there…
UNFORGETTABLE ORANG UTANS T e next day we visited the resort’s very own orang utan sanctu- ary, where we saw orang utans up close, nibbling on bananas, and swinging from tree to tree - a truly unforgettable experience. Time for a restaurant for lunch, and the question was where to start?! T e resort has many options, including a Teppanyaki and one that captures the heritage of Malaysia’s street food stalls. We thought about extending our stay, just so we’d have time to try everything!
PERFECT COMBOS Aſt er an incredible stay at Rasa Ria, we travelled the short distance to Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa where we had another beautiful room overlooking the brilliantly blue sea.
“When the day came for us to
return home, we were reluctant to leave, but felt comforted that one day we would return...”
WATER WONDERS We couldn’t wait to jump on a boat and explore. T e resort has a dedicated marina off ering activities such as dive certifi cation classes, island excursions to the nearby Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park and deep-sea fi shing. We opted for a boat excursion to one of the best snorkelling sites I’ve ever been to. We treated ourselves to a sunset cruise, to catch Borneo’s famous sunset, and continued our challenge to try every restaurant in the resort. One of our favourites was Coco-Joe’s Bar & Grill, where we lounged atop one of the beach-dining platforms, sipping cocktails and enjoying a delectable seafood tower, as the sea lapped gently on the shore beside us.
SPA HEAVEN Aſt er exploring Borneo by both land and sea, there is no better place to relax than at Tanjung Aru’s CHI, T e Spa. It off ers treatments based on traditional Asian healing philosophies and unique local therapies, such as the wonderfully refreshing Borneo Volcanic Mud Wrap which I opted for. Just perfect aſt er a day in the sun.
