BY ALAN ORBELL THE BACKGROUND: One of Canada’s renowned old Canadian Pacifi c grand hotels, fi rst open in 1892 and a Fairmont since 1999. Its 554 rooms fan out in two wings from the main central building and the whole hotel is littered with old
photographs.Some 215 rooms were renovated in 2013, along with the front lobby and Lakeview Lounge, and sched- uled for completion before summer are 67 newly-refurbished guestrooms. THE LOCATION: Simply stunning, a mile high in the heart of the Banff National Park on the shores of Lake Louise and the mountains beyond. It's 45 minutes west of Banff, a couple of hours from Cal- gary and is also served by the seasonal Rocky Mountaineer rail service. THE ROOM: Spacious and well furnished the Deluxe Lakeview room in the Mt. Temple wing offered spectacular views of the snow-covered lake and mountains. Chateau Lake Louise is the perfect base for every year-round activity imaginable. The hotel has a ski hire shop and aside from downhill and cross-country skiing there’s snowshoeing, ice skating on Lake Louise, dog sledding, sleigh rides etc. plus summer activities like hiking, canoe- ing, mountain biking and wildlife tours.

An outstanding hotel just perfect for a winter or summer stay. Its situation overlooking Lake Louise and the mountains is memorable and the huge grounds offer endless opportunities for walks or more strenuous activity.
