Comment APRIL 2014
G3 has always approached the Interactive industry from a land-based perspec- tive, and having watched as the two sectors more closely intertwine, the syner- gies and cross-overs are more apparent today than they’ve ever been. However, there are things that still puzzle, confuse and bemuse when it comes to viewing the Interactive sector through a land-based lens.
At the ICE show in London this year, while waiting in the conference suites to join a panel session, I moved around a video interview taking place between Richard Scheutz of the California Gambling Control Commission and Calvin Ayre. I’ve seen this type of interview taking place at most of the major shows, usually from a prominent booth/studio space at each international exhibition.
What struck me about the scenario in London, was that you had a US regulatory official speaking to an interviewer that represented Calvin Ayre, which isn’t just a branded news forum, but the namesake of a renowned figure in igaming. Not least because he’s currently on US Homeland Security’s Top 10 Most Wanted Criminals list. Visit
www.ice.gov/most-wanted/hsi.htmand you’ll seen a line- up of grisly mug-shots of human traffickers, drug-dealers, racketeers, people smugglers, kidnappers, etc., and the casual, smiling playboy-esque photo of Calvin Ayre, wanted for ‘illegal gambling business and money laundering.’
THERE ARE THINGS THAT STILL PUZZLE, CONFUSE AND BEMUSE WHEN IT COMES TO VIEWING THE INTERACTIVE SECTOR THROUGH A LAND-BASED LENS.

As the founder of Bodog and a taunter of the US authorities attempts to have him extradited to stand trial, matters may well be resolved by payments to the US govern- ment that will eventually see Mr. Ayre exonerated. Presently, however, he’s No. 3 on a list of 10 most wanted people by the US government, and I don’t see how a California Gambling Control Commissioner is either oblivious or ambivalent to the fact. I’m fairly sure a Bernard Madoff TV chan- nel would get short shrift in the financial sector - maybe Interactive is just much more forgiving, but I don’t get it?
