on the success of its barcode ticketing system, first introduced across a number of transport regions in Germany in 2006. This resulted in the creation of the NextWave Mobile Business System.


NextWave is a managed services platform that provides transit agencies with a rapid deployment, low risk, fully integrated solution to mobile service, mobile ticketing, mobile payment, and mobile marketing applications. Presented to the consumer in the form of a transport agency branded app, NextWave allows for direct interaction with the agency’s centralised back office systems. It also interacts with mobile app stores, merchant processing systems, real time messaging systems, third party trip planners, social media networks, mobile wallets, mobile carrier systems, and installed contactless fare infrastructure.


Positioned to allow each transit agency to issue the app in keeping with its own fare structure, branding, graphics and product attributes, NextWave enables users of the iPhone, any Android phone, and soon phones running Windows for Mobile to download the app and take advantage of substantial new convenience features (see box).


Cubic’s NextWave enables passengers to plan their trips,


information and pay fares, all through a common smartphone app. Travellers with the latest NFC equipped-phones don’t even need to carry a smart card, as they can simply tap their phones to present their passes, cancel their ticket or make a fare payment. E-receipts, balance updates, and a variety of useful service alerts also assist users plan and manage their travel account.


As an important part of its NextCity vision, Cubic’s solution easily integrates with a variety of third-party payment, promotional, and enforcement applications, evolving the app as a regional mobility tool. NextWave can help transit agencies get mobile services

to market fast and at a fraction of the cost associated with dedicated systems. At the same time, they are putting in place a solid foundation for the future that enables them to progressively move from conventional NFC fare processing to collaborative partnerships with mobile payment, NFC access and mobile marketing initiatives poised for broad industry recognition.


Using a cloud-based processing system, NextWave integrates with both closed and open-loop contactless fare systems, payment processors, mobile networks, NFC platforms and both iOS and Android Smartphones and tablets. A recent successful trial saw participants purchase fare products, check card balances and log travel and transaction histories.


Revenues across the board


While enhancing the passenger experience, the new capabilities will generate a number of operational benefits. Reduced costs will help transport operators, retail channels, card inventory and distribution centres, processing, ticket vending machine duty cycles and maintenance teams.


New rewards and real-time adjustment strategies to improve customer satisfaction can result in reduced call volumes to service centres and help create new tools to shape passenger behaviours. There are also opportunities to generate new revenue streams through promotional partnerships, which can be identified through analysis of travel data at a macro level. The beauty of this lies in the fact that products and services can be targeted to passengers in the sure knowledge that they will be relevant – because they are developed based on actual behaviours.

efficiency. Cubic offers a variety of support services, including hosting, applications and security management, technical help desk and direct-to-passenger support. In addition, it can provide commercial management functions, marketing


and promotions, monitoring and dashboard reporting.


Cubic is working with a variety of transport- oriented mobile app providers to provide a user-friendly tool through which to navigate and leverage the facilities and relationships through NextFare, NextAccount, NextContact, NextInfo and NextGuide.
