Celebrating the best of the best W
e’ve been giving a lot of space to the UK Rail Industry Awards in Rail Technology Magazine recently,
and with
good reason – the Awards were a fantastic success.
You’ll find all the coverage in this edition, with photos, interviews with the winners, sponsors and organisers, and what to expect next year (think even bigger, even better).
It was great to see so many RTM readers at the event on 20 February at The Brewery, and we hope even more of you can join us next year. But for now, turn to page 20 where our coverage starts.
We also have six pages on the first Gen Y Rail event, the flagship competition of the UK Rail Industry Training Trust. The first event, held in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, has received fantastic praise from the teenagers, teachers and rail industry people involved. RTM’s Roy Rowlands, Kate Ashley and Martin Taylor attended the event, which is just the first of many. More events are due around the country before the national final at Network Rail’s Westwood facility in Coventry in the summer.

Elsewhere, we’ve got a feature on the Thameslink rolling stock, plus an interview with John Pelton, strategic projects director
at Crossrail. He comes from Transcend,
the joint venture
programme partner for Crossrail, and has some fascinating thoughts on innovation, strategic change, and also tells us how his Royal Engineers background has informed his new career in rail infrastructure.
BIM, building information modelling, is another focus this edition. It’s not a new concept, but HS2 is using it at a very early stage and stands to benefit hugely by doing so. HS2’s head of management systems, Jon Kerbey, talks to RTM on page 88.
Also in this issue, we have the IET on driverless trains,
an
interview with Nexus head of rail Raymond Johnstone, the RSSB’s
Adam Hewitt Editor
Colin Dennis, and a special focus on smarter ticketing starting on page 78. There’s a look at what the railways could learn from airport security, an update on the Sentinel Enhancement Programme from Network Rail’s Andy Littlejohns, and an interview with Dr Paul Allen, assistant director of the Institute of Railway Research at the University of Huddersfield, about the newly-launched Centre for Innovation in Rail.
Our next edition, April/May,
will be our biggest of the year, with an extensive preview and show guide for Infrarail 2014.
We’ll see you there, if not before!
