£5,000 personal donation from RTM publisher and managing director Roy Rowlands, and all the money raised at a charity casino sponsored by Konecranes held at the end of the night (see page 31).
The charity is running a series of regional competitions, Gen Y Rail, to help promote careers in rail to 11-19 year olds, culminating in a national fi nal this summer.
The fi rst Gen Y Rail event took place in Newcastle in February – for full coverage see pages 72 to 77.
In his keynote address, Parry-Jones praised UKRIA as a “fantastic showcase” for the industry, and said: “I think it says something about the industry that there’s such an appetite for an event like this, seeing so many distinguished guests here supporting the event, and to see the quite exceptional level of entries.”
Networking continued into the early hours, with the charity casino and entertainment from mind reader and magician Alex Crow.
Speaking to RTM editor Adam Hewitt backstage, some of the winners and sponsors revealed their thoughts on the night and on their victories.
John Hardy, head of track renewals at
London Underground, said: “We started an apprenticeship scheme two years ago, the fi rst capital programmes apprenticeship scheme for track renewals in the history of LU and we’ve been really excited about how well that’s been received in the organisation, the commitment
to the future of the rail industry, particularly in London. That’s why we’re particularly proud to have entered and now won this award.”
Toufi k Machnouk, Network Rail project manager, was named Young Rail Professional of the Year in the male category, and told RTM: “Honestly, I wasn’t expecting it. Looking at some of the entries that came in, and some of the other nominees, there’s a lot of really good stuff out there.
“I’ve never grown as much as I have during my time in this industry. It’s an industry fi lled with opportunity, with great people who do great things. It’s been a fantastic experience and I’ve learnt so much, and it’s incredible to be able to contribute and work with the people I work with, who’ve become like an extended family. I look forward to many more years of doing that!”
Charlotte Mace, also of Network Rail, took the Young Rail Professional award in the female category. She said: “I really didn’t expect this – genuinely! It’s really nice to receive the award, and I was just looking at it, with my name on. That’s quite special.
“Network Rail is huge, and really diverse. In terms of your opportunities and development, from my perspective, it’s been really great. I’ve had such a diverse experience in such a short period of time; I can’t even compare that to other industries.”
