DLR smashes performance record

The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) has achieved the highest-ever scores for punctuality and performance in its 26- year history. Serco Docklands called the result “phenomenal”.

During the 5 January to 1 February period, 99.67% of trains were on time, and only 0.23% of scheduled services did not run. DLR director at TfL, Rory O’Neill said: “The DLR continues to deliver to its passengers one of the most reliable and punctual rail services in Britain.”

Mark Carne takes over early at NR

Network Rail’s new chief executive, Mark Carne, took over from Sir David Higgins earlier than planned. The disruption and damage caused by recent extreme weather prompted discussions between the two men and Network Rail chair Richard Parry- Jones, and Carne took over on 24 February.

Parry-Jones and said: “We wisely have spending clear

priorities; safely restoring services to normal, making our network more resilient

and

investing our £38bn funding package to make Britain’s railways better. We need to get going on this next chapter of our journey.”

Northern Hub track work plans

submitted

Network Rail has submitted plans for a new section of rail near Huyton station as part of the Northern Hub.

The application is for a Transport and Works Act Order to complete work on the fourth track on adjacent land occupied by a telephone exchange and bus station. Network Rail wants to build a new 240m section to allow additional non-stopping services to run on the line. Work should be complete by late 2017.

New ideas needed on station congestion and avoiding bridge rebuilds

different passenger types.

There is a briefing event on Wednesday 2 April 2014 where bidders can find out more about the competition and seek partners to form a consortium.

A new £2m competition has been launched by FutureRailway to reduce future ticket barrier congestion.

The number of passenger journeys

are set to double

over the next 30 years, with some stations already at or near maximum capacity.

To avoid increasingly overcrowded stations, the competition calls for alternatives

to the existing

gate-line, a major source of congestion at stations. Proposals could include new

ticket detection systems, interfaces with existing systems and will ideally cover people, process and technology. Ideas must

be relevant to

any station size and be compatible with the existing national rail infrastructure.

Safety, security and revenue protection should also be considered and recognise the government’s commitment to ITSO based ticketing solutions whilst coping with existing ticket types and considering the needs of

The competition is being run by the Enabling Innovation Team, which is hosted by the RSSB, on behalf of the industry’s Technical Strategy Leadership

Group and FutureRailway initiative.

The EIT is also seeking submissions for its ‘Avoidance of Bridge Reconstruction’ competition, with a deadline of 2 May, aimed at making major electrification programmes simpler and cheaper.

FCC said it will continue with its comprehensive fleet maintenance programme, as

FirstGroup, the owner of FCC, was one of five companies that prequalified to bid for the TSGN franchise. The others were:

It will be a management style contract, the government says, “due to the level of investment and change on the route”.
