Making the Awards a success
RTM editor Adam Hewitt spoke to Roy V Rowlands, managing director of the magazine, about the reasons for launching the UK Rail Industry Awards.

iscussing the genesis of the UK Rail Industry Awards, Roy V Rowlands
said: “We’d been planning events for a long time. I do have a very strong view that young people are the responsibility of adults – I’m unshakeable on that. We’re in a fortunate position where we as a business can do something about it, and I wanted to do something to raise revenue to help young people.”
The original idea for the UK Rail Industry Training Trust came from his son, Roy C Rowlands, business development director at RTM.
“Roy asked me, considering I was prepared to put money into something that’s going to generate revenue to help young people, how I would feel about doing it for rail – helping to engage young people with the rail industry, and to assist them in getting careers in rail. We all know the problems the rail industry has had on that score.

“He convinced me of it. He asked me if I would make a donation to get the Trust kickstarted, which I did, then asked if we could commit to make a donation from the inaugural Awards ceremony to the Trust. It’s all been Roy’s idea. We were going to move into events as a commercial enterprise anyway, but we’re in the fortunate position to be able to use this event – one of many products in our stable – to raise money for this Trust. The fi rst Gen Y Rail event run by the Trust went extremely well.” The Trust is now seeking people to help it in its work – see page 16 for details.

Speaking after the Awards, Roy V Rowlands added: “I’m very proud of Roy, and he worked incredibly hard to make these Awards a success. This Trust is purely down to him, and he should get the credit.
“The event itself was absolutely amazing: we’ve had testimonial after testimonial after testimonial. We’re going to get more, there’s no doubt about it.

“I’d like to thank all of the sponsors, and to give a personal thank you to the judges – they were a very robust and independent judging panel, which was extremely important to us.
“I can’t thank them enough, because they did this in their own time and weren’t remunerated. The whole Rail Technology Magazine team put an awful lot of work into the Awards, and I’d also like to thank everyone who attended on the night, because without them there would be no event.
“We’re looking forward to next year, which will need to be held in a bigger venue. We’ve had so many advance enquiries already – we’ve been inundated with requests, not just from attendees from the inaugural event, but from new organisations wanting to ensure they don’t miss out next year. This year’s event was sold out six weeks beforehand.”
Rail Technology Magazine will keep you updated on news about UKRIA 2015 over the coming months.
