I can’t believe I am sitting down to write my March Chair’s message already – time flies when you’re having fun! If, like my own company, you weren’t in the real time information (RTI) pilot, then you will also be approaching your first RTI year-end probably with caution as other than moving from ‘magnetic media’ to online filing, year-end processing has been the same for as long as I can remember!
Should you have any questions or queries then contact the CIPP’s Advisory Service which will be able to point you in the right direction. So, what’s been happening? Our Hot Topics series has started well with events in London and Leeds so far – with legislation sessions from CIPP’s Policy team, an update from HM Revenue & Customs regarding their Digital Strategy for Agents, and a session from the Office of Tax Simplification around benefits in kind. National Forums will run throughout May, June and July in Glasgow, London, Manchester, Bristol, Newcastle and Birmingham – so I hope to see you at one of the events. The CIPP Annual General Meeting will take place immediately after the Birmingham National Forum on 10 July so I would ask those of you who are Full or Fellow members to vote when you receive the paperwork in PayrollProfessional. You may have seen in News On Line that Vickie Moss has been
ceo message
I am delighted that so many of you have supported us in the payroll industry’s support to alternatives to payday loans. We have been working with payroll providers and employers to not make any charge for processing Credit Union loan repayments through payroll. We view this generosity as part of their corporate social responsibility. Debt worries not only adversely affect employee performance but increase
employee absence so a cohesive and positive support mechanism by both employers and service providers of employee debt management is a positive initiative. We have recently held our first multi-institute event of 2014 where we are developing strong working relationships with other membership organisations, and this forum gives us an opportunity to share common problems. Our next event will focus on
expanding to India.
Our head office move is still progressing but as at the time of writing it hasn’t reached contract exchange so I will hopefully have more to tell you in the next issue.
Andy Agathangelou, our recently appointed Head of Pensions, is developing a ‘friends of CIPP’ network with an auto-enrolment focus. This initiative is developing rapidly and is much needed given the tsunami of businesses due to stage this year. The clear message to any of you reading this and due to stage this year or next is to get in touch with us to complete the auto-enrolment self- analysis tool which will highlight to you what areas you need to start addressing.
doing some work with Solihull College Graphic Design Students to create the marketing for the ‘understand your payslip app’ for a target market of 14–22 year-olds. I was involved at the final presentation stage and the standard was excellent. The app will be launched to coincide with the start of the new tax year. There is more information on page 15.
On a personal level, I have attended my final module of the year – Management of Global and International Employment – which, as I have only ever been involved with UK companies, was an eye opener to say the least. Thankfully, I have a couple of weeks before I need to submit my assignment! I also want to add a congratulations this month to my daughter.
Georgina has always had an interest in (and been good at) maths – currently doing not only her GCSE but an AS Level alongside – so when she started her Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award she asked if she could do the CIPP’s Payroll Technician Certificate as the ‘skill’ aspect. Having started towards the end of last year, she has completed the certificate and got 90% in her final assessment – so she is delighted. It was harder work than she expected, but she thoroughly enjoyed the study.
