CIPP news CIPP Making News CIPP and college students collaborate on new phone app

FOR YOUNG people, understanding tax, national insurance and student loan deductions can seem like an impossible task. This year, however, thanks to some creative flair from three Solihull College students, confusion surrounding money matters is set to become a lot less daunting. The level 5 HND graphic design students have been working with the CIPP on creation of a new phone app ‘Understanding your Payslip’, launching nationally this year. Following a shortlisting process the

CIPP invited learners to pitch their design ideas to the CIPP Board. They made such a good impression that instead of just one design being picked, all three designs were chosen. Matt Walton, one of the students

whose design was selected, said: “I had never looked in depth at payslips before and this project gave me a deeper understanding of the subject. As a graphic designer the ultimate goal of any piece of work is for it to be seen; if in some way our efforts help the CIPP introduce the app to a new audience then I will be happy.” The phone app will launch at the

CIPP launches AE support programmes

IN JANUARY 2014, the CIPP launched a new training programme as part of a series of initiatives to help companies comply with their automatic enrolment (AE) responsibilities. The new programme will help specifically target the ‘capacity crunch’ issue.

In 2013, the CIPP developed a self-assessment tool to help firms evaluate their readiness for automatic enrolment. Now the CIPP are busy working collaboratively with pension companies and industry bodies to produce a new guide to data readiness for AE as well.

Andy Agathangelou, CIPP’s Head of Pensions, commented:

“The number of AE technology solutions is increasing all the time, but they are all hungry for masses of accurate data to feed on. The problem is that not only do companies need to get their routine HR and payroll data in good shape; they also have to produce a mountain of new and complex AE-specific information. Our Guide to Data Readiness for AE is a great knowledge resource for them, and it’s free. “With the staging date tsunami building frighteningly fast from now until the summer of 2017, when it peaks at an eye- watering 135,000 companies staging per month, the payroll and pensions industries need all hands on deck to cope with and brace for the operational impact. Our latest training initiative will create some extra helping hands, just when they are needed. It is because there is a very real, imminent and obvious need to increase the operational capacity in the market that we have received widespread support for our new courses. Twenty organisations and industry bodies, including The Pensions

Regulator (TPR), The Department for Work and Pensions and the Department for Business, Innovations and Skills are attending our launch event to learn more about our plans; we’re very encouraged by their feedback thus far”. There is not just an operational capacity issue. TPR research indicates that some 55% of firms think it will take less than six months to prepare for AE, so it is to be expected that the lack of operational readiness is widespread. Andy comments: “It shouldn’t surprise any of us that the behavioural finance and human nature issues that made AE a necessity in the first place are now playing a big part in the market’s general lack of preparation for AE as well. That’s why we need to work better together to educate and motivate the market whilst increasing operational capacity. If our event goes well there will be better industry collaboration moving forward, and that’s got to be a good thing”.

beginning of the new tax year, and will target young people aged 14–22 years of age: the school leaver, college student and university student. The CIPP hope that through the app young people will gain an understanding of money matters and will be able to budget their salary more efficiently. Vickie Moss, CIPP’s Associate director of marketing, who worked with the group, commented: “Understanding your payslip is essential for young people becoming work ready, along with saving for a pension, knowing what you earn and where your money goes is vital – for everyone. The three designs submitted by the students are really impressive which we believe will encourage young people to take an interest in their payslip, allowing them to successfully budget.”
