Working Dog Shot by Poacher In late 2013, my 7-year-old cow

dog was shot by a poacher. In an- other incident, an acquaintance of mine watched helplessly as 2 hunt- ers shot his 2 cow dogs while they gathered his cows in Louisiana. We wonder if there have been any stud- ies that show the economic value of fi nished cow dogs. Australia funded a study for the economic impact of stock dogs, and their assessment was about $20,000 (AUS) for an average stock dog. We spend years training these

dogs to be good at what they do. Right now the only charge is animal cruelty. I thought about contacting the TSCRA law enforcement divi- sion, but with the county sheriff involved, I wasn’t sure I could or should.

TSCRA responds You were correct to contact your

county sheriff fi rst about this inci- dent. In any case of theft or poach- ing, contact your county sheriff fi rst, then contact your TSCRA spe- cial ranger. He can open a case. TSCRA does not have any infor-

mation on the economic value of a fi nished cow dog. We recommend visiting with cow dog breeders and trainers to get an idea of an industry standard. Charliescowdogs.com is a website for Charlie Trayer, who has provided a working dog demonstra- tion during our School for Success- ful Ranching in recent years and is respected within that industry.
