6 Protecting the UK’s nuclear power
PATOL’S LINEAR HEAT detection cable (LHDC) systems have been installed in a project to help protect cable flats and risers at the Hinkley Point B Nuclear Power Station.
Patol is primarily concerned with the provision of all kinds of safety related equipment and systems. Giving early detection of hazards at temperatures well below flame point, its LHDC comprises a coaxial cable inside a protective sheath. The core of each cable is tinned copper coated steel with resistive negative temperature coefficient polymer insulation. The insu- lation is formulated so that the polymer starts to con- duct as the temperature rises. When this happens, the controller compares the signal and triggers an alarm. Patol’s LHDC system is suitable for installations in
ducts, cable risers, mezzanine floors or in tunnels, to trigger alarms for any hot spot occurring on even the
smallest sections of the overall cable length. It is ver- satile in that it can both provide an alternative to point heat detectors in conventional (space) protection situ- ations and it may also be readily installed in very close proximity to monitored hazards. View the full story at

Ageing street lights are putting lives in danger
OSRAM IS URGING local councils to put public safety first by upgrad- ing their lighting systems to white solutions, like LED lighting. More than three quarters of European city street lighting instal- lations are over 25 years old and there are still more than 90 million traditional street lights in Europe - which is a concern for the safety of motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. LED lighting improves security with balanced light distribution. With minimal glare, the clarity of
LED light illuminates hazards and black spots, helping to reduce the number of accidents. It is also expected to last 50,000 to 100,000 hours, which reduces maintenance costs and ensures the public expe- riences safer lighting for longer. Safety is also improved with light- ing control options available to dim street lights instead of switching them off during non-peak hours. White lighting can also be achieved with High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps. Many
councils that are unable to invest in a complete LED solution can install HID solutions for an effi- cient and high white light output. Osram’s Peter Smith explained, “Cities across the UK, are starting to upgrade to white light solutions, but it’s still concerning how many dated lighting installations exist. Installing brighter white solutions like LED or HID will improve visi- bility ensuring that motorists and pedestrians feel safer in busy cities. “Lighting currently accounts for 50% of electricity consumption in cities. LED and white lighting solu- tions with suitable lighting con- trols, can contribute to saving some of this energy. It’s up to European governments to ensure that lighting upgrades continue to be rolled-out so that these ambi- tious 2020 plans can be met.”

New technical channel network for drives and motors
ABB HAS RECENTLY amalgamated its UK variable speed drives and electric motors networks into a single brand identity, to create a new benchmark for technical advice, delivery, lifecycle services and overall customer satisfaction.
The former ABB Drives Alliance and ABB Motor Service Partner networks are now part of the Authorised Value Provider programme. The Authorised Value Provider network raises the bar in sales, support and services for drives and motors across the UK, providing technical expertise, prod- uct and service availability, all under one recognis- able, local branch structure. It extends across the entire lifecycle of both products by providing ser- vices such as energy and productivity appraisals, installation, start-up and preventive maintenance. Neil Ritchie, local business unit manager for
ABB’s drives and controls business said, “The Authorised Value Provider programme marks the growth of the already successful ABB channel net-
