News Industry Ellis fire fighters installed at Canary Wharf and corrosion resistant.

“In order for FP rated cables to continue working in an emergency they need to remain intact and in place,” said Ellis’ UK sales director, Paul Nolan. “If these cables aren’t properly restrained then the risks are clear - the loss of vital services and the likeli- hood of live cables falling and causing potentially lethal hazards.

THE NEW BP4 Tower at Canary Wharf has installed fire-proof

cable cleats manufactured by Ellis.

Designed specifically for installation with fire protec- tion (FP) rated cables, the Phoenix cleats are manufac- tured in 316L stainless steel and are both fire-proof

“Any building should strive to ensure that the products used to protect the emergency systems are the best available, but when you consider BP4 is a 130m, 23 storey, 530,000ft2

Blazing a trail for apprenticeship rejuvenation

AS PART OF its commitment to reform UK apprenticeships, the government has launched a major new programme aimed at improving apprenticeships across eight key industry sectors in England, including the elec- trotechnical sector. Formed as Trailblazer Groups, each team will be given the oppor- tunity to lead the development of new apprenticeship standards, and the high level assessment approaches that accompany them. Once ratified, these standards recommended by the Trailblazers will become the future ideal stan- dard for apprenticeships within each given sector.

SJD Electrical is the first Milton Keynes-based company to become a Trailblazer, working closely

with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and a selected few leading electri- cal contractors. The main aims of the govern-

ment’s apprenticeship reforms are to listen to employers and assess apprentices and apprenticeships. An apprentice will need to demon- strate competence through rigor- ous assessment to ensure that they

are

ready

to

progress.

Apprenticeship outcomes will also be awarded on a scale to recognise the level of achievement. Reformed standards will also be ‘short and easy to under- stand’- describing the skills and knowledge that an individual will need to be fully competent in a given occupation. www.sjd-electrical.co.uk

WHEN INTERNATIONAL SECURITY company G4S moved its Estonian operations into a new complex in the coun- try’s capital city Tallinn, a fire system designed around Kentec’s fire control panels was chosen to protect the architec- turally innovative building. The building accommodates over 800 employees offering a mix of meeting and recreation areas on all floors, plus a terrace cafe on the eighth floor, whilst also ensuring that the building is flexible enough to accommodate special needs users. The fire system, supplied and installed by Estonian fire and security specialists Alarmtec AS, was designed around two Kentec Syncro 4-loop address- able control panels and a Sigma XT extinguishing control panel. The system is supported by Argus Vega protocol fire data communications with over 430 Vega devices, including intelli- gent smoke/heat sensors, call points and microprocessor con- trolled modules. www.kentec.co.uk
