New opportunities for electrical wholesalers

ore and more homeowners are beginning to implement energy saving initiatives to make their
homes as energy efficient as possible to combat rising fuel costs. By installing measures such as double glazing, loft and cavity wall insulation, they are saving energy by effectively sealing-up the property, making it air tight to prevent heat loss. However, by making the property air tight, natural ventilation is prohibited, leaving the dwelling with poor indoor air quality vulnerable to condensation and mould. In addition to this, and thanks to the
Government’s ambitious commitment to reduce the nation’s carbon emissions by 80% for 2050, retrofitting is also becoming big business. In order to achieve the Government’s target, 2,500 retrofits would have to take place each day, this works out at 333 completions per hour for the next 30 years! Retrofitting is set to have a big impact on
life in Britain, from individual households to larger community led programmes like the Cambridge Project. Yet again, everyone is looking at how they can reduce their carbon footprint and save energy. This in turn provides electrical contractors
and electricians with new opportunities ranging from extract fans to installing energy efficient ventilation systems into thousands of homes across the country. What’s more, with the ‘help to buy’ scheme predicted to promote house sales and construction in 2014, British building and retrofitting is set to gather pace.
A necessary requirement Ventilation is a necessary requirement of
everyday life, for example, did you know that the average person spends up to 90% of their time indoors, 70% of which is spent inside their own home? In a property of four people, each person contributes

of the unit are taken into account before specification. Often, the overriding factor comes down to performance, but if the body of the unit won’t fit through a loft hatch or takes up an entire utility room then this is clearly not practical. Finding a system which is easy to install also
makes sense and one of the downsides to heat recovery systems is that they can be complicated to install due to the amount of ducting involved, especially if retrofitting. If you get it wrong, the penalties can be huge. The key to ensuring MVHR units perform efficiently therefore is correct installation. When it comes to retrofitting, Single Room
approximately four pints of moisture per day through routine activities such as breathing, bathing, cooking, etc – this amounts to over 100 pints of water vapour per week! This huge volume of moisture has to go
somewhere, so it comes as no surprise that around 1 in 5 homes in the UK suffer from condensation and mould problems. Sealing up homes to make them air tight will result in more and more houses suffering from condensation and mould problems.
The rise of heat recovery Today, one of the most popular choices for
energy efficient ventilation is heat recovery. Ideal for new build and extensive retrofit projects, it will come as no surprise to learn that over the past five years, MVHR has experienced a significant uplift in demand owing to the increase in air tightness of properties and the requirement to achieve ever more stringent DER targets. There are, however, a few things which you
should consider when it comes to choosing the right MVHR appliance. A heat recovery system should be fit for purpose. It is important that the dimensions

Heat Recovery Units(SRHR) are an energy efficient alternative to traditional extract fans as they help to combat condensation and mould whilst recovering the heat normally lost through extraction. The recovered heat is then returned back into the room. This is a great way of improving the indoor air quality of a property, controlling condensation and mould issues and helping the occupant to save money on their energy bills. Ventilation is evolving and EnviroVent is
already developing new markets using innovative products and strategies with like- minded electrical distributor’s right at the heart of our business.
