During the last couple of years, a number of

BCOP’s properties have undergone major refurbishments in a bid to further modernise and extend the facilities that are home to hundreds of people in the charity’s independent living or supported housing schemes. The latest project recently completed is BCOP’s

Robert Harvey House in the Handsworth Wood area of the West Midlands. As part of the major two million pound refurbishment which saw two sizeable extensions built on to each end of the property, a completely new fire and alarm

detection system was installed to offer residents the most comprehensive protection. Dave Lewis, Fire Systems Manager, Fire Safety

Services UK said: “For the Robert Harvey House development the system we installed incorporates Gent’s Vigilon panels using its innovative S-Quad detection products, as it offered the required levels of high sensitive detection and was robust and reliable enough to protect the property’s residents and staff.” The solution incorporates the main Vigilon four

loop control panel and a fully functional repeater panel installed on the first floor by the nurses bay. S-Quad detectors were selected to help in the

reduction of false alarms and increase the sensitivity for the building. In each of the 65 bedrooms, optical heat sounders were installed, and a combination of optical heat, and optical heat combining sounders and strobes were fitted in the communal areas. The installation was phased over a period of

two years during which time the property remained open and occupied by residents and staff. The Fire Safety Services UK team worked in stages on individual wings of the building while they were temporarily closed.
