❙ French temperature control specialist SISE unveiled its Heat & Cool system, designed to support vario- therm moulding for projects requiring high surface gloss or elimination of weld lines. The new Heat & Cool system controller can be configured to operate with one or two mould coolant circuits, allowing variotherm or heat-cool moulding to be carried out on existing moulds if required. Maximum process temperature is 180˚C.

❙ German automation company Hekuma demon- strated a high performance automation system for production of insulin pen needle hubs on a 96-cavity Braunform mould on the Engel stand. Each part incorporated a high precision 0.3mm bore. The production system was running on a 5s cycle on an ENGEL e-motion 440/160 T WP machine.

❙ Ter Plastics introduced its Terez GT3 range of high glass fibre content PA6 and 66 compounds at the show. The new resins offer glass reinforcement levels of up to 60% and are aimed at metal replacement applications demanding high strength, stiffness and dimensional stability. The company says the compounds also offer better elongation at break in the unconditioned state than conventional PA6 and 66 grades.


Glaroform and Beck get closer in IML alliance

Swiss mouldmaker Glaroform said it was in the final stages of installing a production capable IML packaging cell from Beck Automation in its recently expanded Technical Centre at Glarus. Glaroform sales and

marketing director Urs Harder said the company planned to have the production cell, built around a new 175 tonne Elion moulding machine from Netstal, in operation for beginning of this year. The new IML production cell joins 420 and 650 tonne moulding machines in the 1,700m2 expansion of its Technical Centre and production plant.

Glaroform has a long-

standing relationship with IML automation provider Beck Automation and at K the two companies, together with cooling technology supplier Ernst H Furrer, label maker Viappani and data collection specialist BFA Solutions, were promoting a new IML Compe- tence alliance. “The companies are all independent but when the customer comes to us it is like they are dealing with one supplier. We work as one,” said Beck Automation sales and marketing director Nicholas Beck. “We can offer a turnkey

solution with one price, it is all transparent,” he said. During the exhibition, the

companies demonstrated an integrated IML system producing 500ml oval contain- ers with side decoration on a two-cavity mould with confor- mal cooling capability. The 11g part featured a 0.4mm wall thickness and was produced on a 3s cycle on a 160 tonne Engel e-Motion all-electric moulding machine. System features included

100% camera inspection and full data collection for quality assurance. ❙

Milliken researching PE nucleators

Polymer additives supplier Milliken said at K it is investing in PE nucleation R&D to benefit from an anticipated future switch from PP to PE in high volume injection moulded packaging applications such as closures. The company expects the North American shale gas revolution, which is making low cost ethane feedstocks available to the polyethylene production sector, will widen the pricing gap between PE and PP in the future and see processors reconsider their polymer selection choices. “Because of shale gas there

are predictions that a lot of applications will move from PP to PE,” said Milliken marketing and business development

manager for plastic additives Reed Walker. “We are investing heavily in PE nucleation R&D; we have nothing we can bring out now but we believe we will be able to offer something significantly better than first generation products.” Walker said the company has already secured some

applications in the closure industry, where users are realising faster cycle times and improved dimensional stability with HDPE using its Hyperform HPN-20E nucleator. “If you nucleate HDPE you can neutralise the effect of pigments,” he said. ❙
