Sumitomo Demag demonstrates on-the-fly colour changeover


ActiveColourChange is a new plasticising unit addition from Sumitomo (SHI) Demag that allows packaging producers to change colour almost on-the-fly. Demonstrated on a 280


tonne Systec SP280 machine – the first of a new line of packaging machines from the German manufacturer – the system comprises a liquid pigment dosing system that delivers colour directly into the metering zone of the screw. The company says this means that compared with master- batch dosing via the feed hopper, only a very short length of the screw contains colorant. This makes colour changing a much faster process. The system uses dosing


technology from ViscoTec Pumpen und Dosiertechnik and liquid colour from Rowasol. Up to five different colours can be used. The system at K was configured with three 1% colorants and was producing 1-litre PP IML buckets on a two-cavity Collomb Mecanique mould. Shot weight was 78g and cycle time 5.3s.


The ActiveColorChange


system is integrated into the NC5 machine control, which automates the colour change process. After a programmed number of cycles, the machine initiates the colour change routine. The user can select appropriate times to clear the first colour and to introduce the second, allowing full automation of the changeover, according to the company.


The new Systec SP


machines use a hybrid drive technology with accumulator- backed injection and are designed for packaging or fast cycle technical moulding applications with high flow lengths (350:1) that require high injection speeds (up to 500mm/s). It is pitched at applications with cycle times in excess of 5s, according to the company.


l The company also provided more details of its SL (Spiral Logic) plasticising system at the show. This uses a cush- ioned plasticising screw with no compression zone, controlling the rate of fill to suit the material and process- ing parameters. This results in a homogenous melt with very consistent viscosity and reduced melt stress. Used in conjunction with a


switchable non-return valve such as the company’s ActiveLock device, the SL plasticising system is said to be highly suitable for produc- tion of precision technical parts and optical components. The SL system is already in use in Japan, where it is specified on around 15% of applicable machines. It is now being rolled out in Europe as an option on all SE-EV all-electric machines in the range from 50 to 180 tonnes. The system was shown at K producing a smartphone case in a PC/ABS blend on a two-cavity mould. Shot weight was 45g and cycle time 25s. ❙ www.sumitomo-shi-demag.eu
