❙ Germany-based mould and hotrunner firm Männer extended its Duo-Man range of add-on all-electric injection units with the launch of the 50.3, its largest model yet offering shot volumes from 16-30cm3

allows multi-component moulding to be performed on standard single barrel injection moulding machines.

❙ German automation systems developer Waldorf Technik demonstrated its modular Vario TIP pipette tip and blood tube production system on a 64-cavity Tanner mould running a 4.5s cycle on an electric Allrounder 520A machine on the Arburg stand. Eliminating the use of compressed air, and its associated contamination risks, the Vario TIP system collects and maintains parts in cavity groups and can be supplied with or without in-line inspection, said the company.

❙ Italy’s Radici Group said it is targeting metal replacement applications with its new Radicistrong range of PA6 and PA6,6 LFT grades. Nine grades are currently available in the product portfolio, ranging from 20-60% glass fibre content. Marketing and application development director Enrico Spini said the company is also considering offering a PA6,10-based Radicstrong product line.

42 Kurz displays bright solutions

Decorative foil specialist Leon- hard Kurz demonstrated its new 3DHS process, which allows decorative surfaces to be selectively applied to complex 3D structures. At K, the technique was demonstrated applying a partial chrome-effect finish to an automotive air vent bezel. The company said the part could not have been produced using a conventional hot stamping technique and would have been produced in the past by assembling a plated moulding onto an undecorated base. operations. The process

uses a specially

formulated high elasticity stamping foil, which is used in the 3DHS die system and forming machine. The high elasticity of the foil allows it to be thermally shaped to the geometry of the substrate prior to the stamping process. Kurz said the foils are

available in a traditional bright chrome finish as well as a

range of brushed effects and colours. The 3DHS die system is pat-

ented and incorporates fixing elements for securing the hot stamping foil to be shaped and a hot stamping die adapted to suit the geometry of the part being decorated. Die develop- ment is carried out by Hinderer + Mühlich and the machine by Baier, both Kurz group companies. ❙

Victrex puts focus on metal replacement applications

The main theme of the Victrex stand at K was metal replace- ment, with a two-component cable clamp produced for Boeing in a combination of PEEK and silicone showing the benefits of using high perfor- mance plastics as well as the need for expert processing advice.

The injection moulded clamp was supplied by Amphenol PCD for the Boeing 787. While the 20% weight saving each clamp offers over the metal predecessor is small, the overall saving is

vast as each 787 aircraft incorporates 15,000 clamps. And reducing the weight of a plane by as little as 45kg can yield annual fuel savings worth $10,000, according to Victrex. Boeing also benefits from a much simplified installation, according to Victrex Europe strategic marketing director Harald Hedderich. “The saving here is half a minute for each installation.”

provided detailed technical support to Amphenol during the development of the two-compo-

nent clamp. “PEEK is a product that is relatively easy to process but the details need a little extra support. Adhesion to PEEK is not easy,” he said. At K, the company also

introduced a new glass fibre reinforced PEEK grade – 90GLK30BLK EU – suitable for direct food contact applica- tions. It meets US and EU requirements and is particu- larly suitable for applications in food processing machinery requiring exposure to high pressure steam (up to 19 bar). ❙
