From the heart
This month, Irish Beauty talks to Bettina Bordas, Managing Director of Crystal Nails Ireland, about her love of the nail industry, meeting Bono and guilty pleasures.
I ended up in the beauty industry because…My dream was to give something more to the Irish nail technicians and improve the education. I wanted to bring more colours and creativity into the nail industry and show the nail techs that this is not only a job but it is a profession that needs to come from the heart.
An average day forme is… To wake up early and takemy lovely English Pointer for a walk, then I do some exercises to get ready for the day. Themorning is the only fixed part, once I start working there is always somethingmore urgent and an important challenge arises that changes my schedule. After work, I cook something healthy and answer a few more emails as business never sleeps.
The best thing aboutmy job is… Facing new challenges all the time. The world of nails is always changing, therefore we need to improve ourselves. We can never stop learning new shapes and techniques so I regularly take part in training in different countries to update my skills.
My beauty icon is…Linda Evangelista. I like her very much because she is a model who looked different every season, so much so they called her ‘chameleon face’. To stay on the top you have to be like her.
My top beauty tip is…Less is sometimes more.
My favourite beauty treatment is… A Balinese massage. I tried it during a holiday in Bali three years ago, it was the most relaxing treatment I’ve ever had. After that I felt like I was a new person.

If I wasn’t in the beauty industry I would be…Working for people’s health. I am very much into healthy food and training. I’ve been on the Paleo Diet for two years now so I don’t eat processed food.
My ideal weekend would be… Away from the city with my family somewhere in the countryside. No email, no phone, no television, just the nature and fresh air.
My favourite book is…Gone with theWind by Margaret Mitchell. This book reminds me every time that you always need to fight for your dreams. Nothing comes easy.
My favourite filmis…Hard to choose. I like all movies that offer something new; something interesting.
My guilty pleasure is…I love dark chocolate. It always helps me to survive hard days.
Themost famous person I have met is…Bono. I met him in Temple Bar when one of our international
master educators came over to Ireland. She had extremely long stiletto nails which Bono noticed and wanted to invite her for a drink but she said no – can you imagine?
When growing upmy rolemodel was…To be honest I never had one. I don’t believe there is a perfect person in this world but I do believe we can choose certain skills from individuals to follow. There are so many interesting people who we could learn a lot from.
My favouritemotto in the world is…Never give up. If you want something and you are not afraid to work hard for it, the success will come.
I’matmy happiest when…I see the sunrise in the morning and I feel so happy that I have a lovely husband who supports me all the time.
I would like to be remembered as…The person who reformed and gave something special to the nail industry in Ireland.
