OPPOSITE: The sun has dropped behind the mountains at Roaring Branch, near Big Stone Gap, Va., on April 12, 1966, as a northbound extra drops downgrade. Extra 861 North has exited Callahan’s Nose Tunnel, gone beneath Southern’s Appalachia Division main, and is now crossing Powell River and U.S. Route 23.

TOP: In May 1967, brake shoe smoke is visible as Extra 360 North (actually train 56 running quite late) eases through the passing track at Big Stone Gap, Va., to meet train 55. L&N’s older power wasn’t equipped with dynamic braking, so engineers only had the “big brake” (the train air brakes) for slowing and stopping a heavy train.

ABOVE: On Friday, February 2, 1968, Corbin-Norton train 865 rolls through Emerling, Ky., on the outskirts of Loyall. This train was used to ferry “fresh” RS3s back to Loyall after shopping and inspections at Corbin or South Louisville Shops, so the rear two units will be dropped there.

lease enjoy these few more im- ages as we take an extended visit to the Louisville & Nashville

Railroad’s Cumberland Valley Divi- sion. Three different situational maps from 6:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 8:00 p.m., on March 21, 1969, accompany these photos. Obviously the Corbin dis- patchers had a number of different trains to deal with, and most of them operated in “dark” timetable and train order territory. Not seen are all the ad- ditional things with which a dispatcher had to deal, such as maintenance of way crews needing track time, train crews and supervisors checking in al- most constantly seeking a fresh line up, or a status on particular train move- ments, and the constant chatter back and forth between the dispatcher and operators along the division.
