pulled by UP No. 1996, the SP heritage unit. The front wheel of the Big Boy’s pony truck is still on the panel track, while the rest of the locomotive is on the Metrolink main. Next stop: Covina, Calif., for a brief public display starting at 07:00.

The Sipos family had been waiting on top of

their Jeep since 8:00 a.m. to see the 4014 roll by at 12:28 p.m. Grant Sipos waves excitedly to the passengers riding the locomotive and tender as the train makes it way toward West Colton (right). The special was symboled PWCWC2 25 (Passenger, West Colton to West Colton) consisting of UP SD70M No., 4884, the 4014 and SD70ACe No. 1996. While No. 4014 was the center of attention, UP also made a delivery that morning, dropping off ex-Missouri Pacific SD40-2 No. 3105, a 50- foot boxcar, and an ex-Rock Island bay-window caboose, which were leapfrogged across the parking lot to take up residence at the museum in place of No. 4014. In another 51 years, will the unremarkable EMD road switcher be pulled out to be restored to service? Somehow, we doubt it. — WALT LANKENAU AND STEVE CRISE
