Photo freights on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad frequently have rear and/or mid- train pushers, recreating a common practice on mountain railroads in the days of steam.

IN MYAUGUST 2013 CAMERA BAG on ways to get authentic looking steam train photos on tourist railroads, I mentioned steam photo charters. As photo charters are the ultimate in offering historically authentic looking steam photo opportunities, and with a new season of these photo charter events upon us, I would like to cover participation in a charter. (I realize that for experienced char- ter participants this will be like “preaching to the choir,” but for fans who may have nev- er been on a photo charter, the information may be useful.) Steam photo charters have a long history,

going back at least into the 1950s when rail- road clubs would charter a steam train to give their members a last look at the steam era in the years it was drawing to a close. These early steam excursions often were not specifically designed for the photographer, although stops were often made for photog- raphy, usually with the train posed at a sce- nic or historic location. From this early practice, charters have

evolved to now usually being organized not only by railroad clubs but railroad museums and historical societies. They are often planned by serious steam train aficionados and photographers knowledgeable in rail- road history and designed specifically for the photographer wanting historic looking steam train photos. Every effort is made to present trains and locations that are au- thentic in every way to the early to mid- 1900s time periods they portray. Locomo- tives and equipment of steam tourist lines and museums are usually used, but some rail historical societies will at times offer ex- cursions behind their restored main line steam locomotive. Vintage rail cars are used, and the locomotive and tender may be re-let- tered from the tourist line name into a his- torical railroad name and markings. In addi- tion to riding and photographing the train, participants may get a roundhouse or shop tour for more interesting photo opportunities, as well as slide shows or movies of steam. Out on the line, photographers ride the

train to one or more selected photo locations where no modern backgrounds will intrude. Everyone detrains and forms an organized

photo line for the main feature of a steam charter, the “photo runby” or “runpast.” The train then backs down the track and steams back by with lots of smoke, steam, and whis- tle for the benefit of both still photographers and those with video/movie cameras. On most photo trains, several photo runbys are usually held at different locations. Original or authentic looking railroad structures such as water tanks, turntables and roundhouses, if available, are utilized in photo settings. Work trains are sometimes featured using maintenance of way equip- ment, and some event organizers arrange for vintage automobiles to pose near the lo- comotive. Occasionally, other period activi- ties are recreated, such as World War II troop trains, complete with a period U.S. Army vehicle or two and a few soldier reen- actors. Winter photo trains are especially photo-

genic. Not only might they feature the lead locomotive plowing snow, but the cold air and winter landscape make the smoke and steam very dramatic. Tickets are sold to cover the cost of opera-

tions and liability insurance for the tourist railroad, historical society, or railroad muse- um that owns and operates the train. Prices will vary from around $100 up to several hundred dollars for a one-day event, and in- to the thousands for some multi-day events, not to mention air fare and car rental costs if you have to fly in (multi-day event prices usually include motel lodging and most meals for each day of the excursion).

The Photo Freight Some photo train events will use vintage or authentic looking “clerestory roofed” passen- ger coaches. However, a great feature of many steam photo trains is a freight car on- ly consist, and maybe even some work equip- ment such as rail derricks. On photo freights, participants usually ride in open gondolas to the runby locations, or on occa- sion may be in a “chase train” separate from the photo freight. Either way preserves the appearance of a freight train without having passenger cars in the consist to carry the photographers. Some photo freights will be a
