This page contains a Flash digital edition of a book.
Each photographer can submit up to ten slides or digital photos (if you have access to a high-quality scanner, we strongly encour- age you to scan your slides and send us the digital files). Slides must be placed in a 20- slide storage page (send the entire page, even though only ten spaces will be used). Slides not sent in a page will not be considered. Dig- ital photos can be sent on CD but must be a minimum of nine inches across at 300 d.p.i. in TIF format (if you really want to impress us, change the color mode to CMYK). If you open your photo in Photoshop and check its dimen- sion in pixels, it must be at least 2700 pixels across the longest dimension. Digital files that are too small are the single biggest rea- son we don’t use a photo. Digital photos may be edited for exposure, but should not be oth- erwise enhanced (i.e. do not add or remove el- ements that were or were not actually in the scene as photographed); send the full image, and leave any cropping to us. Along with the CD, include hard copies of the photos on sep- arate sheets of paper (no more than four pho- tos per sheet) so we’ll have a good idea what the shots look like, as we will not open every single image on a CD to see what’s in there — and please make sure that the reference num- bers on the hard copy and captions corre- spond with the file numbers on the CD. The easier you make it for the editors to see your shots, the more favorably they will look upon your submissions. Prints are not accepted. The deadline for submissions is April 18,

2014. Clearly mark on the outside of your envelope “PHOTO LINE 2013” and send it to Railfan & Railroad, 108 Phil Hardin Road, Newton, NJ 07860. Please enclose return packaging and postage for slides. Any CD’s

not accompanied by return postage will be disposed of after the selections are made. About 20 photos (including the cover and FI- NAL FRAME) will appear in the May 2014 is- sue. —S.B.

A Day In the Life... We were delighted when Ron Flanary con- tacted us with the idea for the “A Day In the Life” feature on the Louisville & Nashville. Glimpses into the past can really show what railroading was like in previous decades. Along with the information gleaned from the dispatcher sheets and all the representative photos in the feature, Ron provided us with a wealth of information including snapshot maps that showed the status of the railroad at various times throughout the day and some timetable excerpts — and, of course, more photos. All of this material wouldn’t fit the format of a standard magazine article, but technology has made it so we now have fewer constraints. All the material that oth- erwise would not have been used is available in our digital edition beginning on page 58. If you are a current print-only subscriber, you can add the digital edition to your sub- scription for only $10. Just call our office at 1-888-526-5365 and we’ll get you set up. Dig- ital subscriptions allow you to view your R&R on any desktop or laptop computer, as well as Apple devices such as the iPad. There is additional material in the digital edition almost every month; we usually have one additional feature and we often have video extras (there is some bonus Strasburg Rail Road video on page 56 of this issue). Consid- er adding a digital edition to your current print subscription.— S.B.
