control with regular servos and receiver that I had at the time, and it flew, but you could see that it was burdened by the extra equip- ment weight and did not fly as well. “So I decided (after not flying it for thirty some years) this winter to convert it to elec- tric power on my return home from Florida. I took your advice and used that Coverite ‘tissue like’ iron-on covering to re-do the stab, the new rudder, and elevator and was very pleased with the results. I used a Rim- fire 370 motor with an 850 mAh Li-Po. The radio is a Spektrum with AR6115E receiver and Futaba S3114 servos. I also installed a pull-pull control system. wire landing gear that plug into brass tubing glued into the fuselage. It is held in place by the cross bracing and a little piece of a #64 rubber band which acts as a shock absorber. “I’m extremely pleased with the way it flies. It needed a little down elevator trim, but that Rimfire 370, I think, easily puts out more power than the Cox .049 ever did. The 850 mAh battery will go about 11 or 12 min- utes cruising around at a little over half throttle. Its specs are: span, 39 inches up- per, 27 inches lower; and weight, 16 ounces without battery. Most of the covering is the original doped silk span.”


Project update My Luscombe Silvair 8E came from the National Balsa www.nationalbalsa.com full kit that is based on the Wendell Hostetler plans www.hostetlersplans.com. The build is moving along smoothly. The laser-cut parts are matching up with the plans per- fectly and the wood quality is great. The Likes Line www.thelikesline.com pre- bent and welded landing gear dropped right into place on the Luscombe. The National Balsa laser-cut front and rear plywood wing spars and the receiving plywood spar box parts of the wing spar fit well. I doubt I could have come close to the precision fit of the kit. Time to get back to building.
