Peru
Peru is a dramatic and inspiring country with beautiful mountains, barren deserts and exotic jungles that hide the mysterious wonders of the ancient Inca civilisation. It’s easy to see how the Peruvian way of life has been shaped by a rich history - from nomadic origins to the mighty Inca Empire and conquest by Spanish Colonialists.
Amazon
The Amazon is a cacophony of jungle sounds and colours. It is home to about 30% of the world’s animal species: millions of insects, thousands of birds and the enigmatic jaguar. It’s also home to several native communities, including the Indians, Conquistadores, Mestizos, Aborigines and Gringos. Friendly local guides are on hand to lead you into the most beautiful parts of the jungle.
HIGHLIGHTS: Explore by dug-out canoe, on foot or along a canopy walkway.
Cusco and the Sacred Valley
Cusco and the Sacred Valley is an area of stunning natural beauty and Inca treasures. It’s not hard to see why the Incas saw the valley as a representation of heaven on earth, a fertile and mountainous land dotted with magnificent temples and fortresses.
HIGHLIGHTS: Learn how to make Peruvian cocktails, wander around colourful local markets, trekking, cycling, whitewater rafting.
Arequipa and the Colca Canyon
The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Arequipa is one of Peru’s prettiest cities. It’s nicknamed La Ciudad Blanca (the White City) because of its fine Colonial- era Spanish mansions, which are built from white volcanic rock. Early morning is the best time to visit the Colca Canyon to watch huge Andean condors rising from the depths of the gorge.
HIGHLIGHTS: Traditional villages, hiking trails, traditional thermal baths, Santa Catalina Convent.
Machu Picchu
15th century Machu Picchu is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Built at an altitude of 2400 m, it is the most sacred of all Inca sites. You can get there by walking the Inca Trail, riding the mountain train or taking a lesser- trodden track such as an eco-trail that passes by dramatic glacial lagoons and pretty mountain flowers.
HIGHLIGHTS: Trekking.
Lake Titicaca
At 3800 m above sea level, Titicaca is the world’s highest navigable lake. Flanked by Bolivia’s snow-capped mountains, Lake Titicaca has several islands where customs remain unchanged over centuries. Traditional lakeside stone lodges are a peaceful place to stay and enjoy exceptional views across the lake, especially at sunrise.
HIGHLIGHTS: Sea kayaking, dinner with a local family.
Northern Peru
Not many venture to Northern Peru, but those that do are rewarded with views of the Andes at their highest and most dramatic. You can explore a land of ancient Inca sites and also visit the coast to see working fishing villages. If you need a relaxing end to your trip, spend a few days relaxing on the tranquil beaches.
HIGHLIGHTS: Trekking, village visits, swimming, watersports, diving.
