Borneo

Borneo offers an unrivalled array of natural wonders: dense rainforests, rich wetlands and the highest peak in South East Asia, Mount Kinabalu. Home to a myriad of exotic endangered species, the island is most renowned for its orang-utan sanctuaries, which offer the chance to meet these beautiful creatures in the wild.

Kota Kinabalu

The modern capital of Sabah state, Kota Kinabalu, is often lovingly referred to by locals as KK. The city’s unusual blend of Malay, Chinese and European influences are visible in the mix of new architecture, religious culture and ancient traditions. Just a stone’s throw across the South China Sea you can find long sandy beaches, virgin coral reefs and tropical rainforests.

HIGHLIGHTS: Scuba-diving, swimming.

Kinabatangan River

The Kinabatangan River is the longest in Sabah and reputed for its wildlife- rich wetlands. Enter this wonderfully diverse ecosystem by boat through the small village of Sukau. The emblematic proboscis monkey and saltwater crocodile are among some of the species to look for as the river meanders through the flood plains and ox-bow lakes of Lower Kinabatangan.

HIGHLIGHTS: Boat trips in search of wildlife, sunset safaris.

Kinabalu National Park and Mount Kinabalu

Rising from the lowland forests of the national park towers Mount Kinabalu, South East Asia’s highest peak. At 4095 m, the views from the summit are spectacular and are well worthy of the two-day climb to see the sun rising over the misty jungle. The botanical walking trails around the base of the mountain deservedly earned Kinabalu National Park recognition as Malaysia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site.

HIGHLIGHTS: Trekking, hiking forest trails.

Sepilok

The world-famous Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre in Sepilok not only cares for orphaned apes, it provides a dense forested playground for these endangered wild creatures. This wildlife sanctuary will offer you the best chance of watching groups of gentle primates as they swing through the treetops and descend daily to feed on milk and bananas.

HIGHLIGHTS: Orang-utan spotting, forest walks.

Mulu National Park

Jagged pinnacles, dense swamp forests and ancient caves all accentuate the exceptional natural beauty of Mulu National Park. Renowned for its biological diversity, more than 200 species of birds and beautiful butterflies can be found here. Dusk is the best time to visit the limestone Mulu Caves: take a guide to Deer Cave and watch the nightly exodus of over three million wrinkle-lipped bats!

HIGHLIGHTS: Caving, canopy walk, trekking.

100 Borneo’s Beaches

Sabah is one of the premier destinations in Borneo for tropical islands with idyllic beaches. Just off Kota Kinabalu’s east coast, clear waters and unspoilt beaches nestle in the shadows of tropical jungles, providing the perfect opportunity to relax. The quality of marine life here is first class, which is why the diving is believed to be among the best in the world.
