KM doubles up in China
Germany’s KraussMaffei has completed an expansion of its plant at Haiyan in China, doubling the floorspace in preparation for production of larger injection moulding machines for the automotive industry early next year. The company said the first
large moulding machine to be produced entirely at the plant will be a 1,300 tonne MX machine equipped with the Mucell physical foam moulding
technology. It will be supplied to the automotive components group Yanfeng. l In a separate move, KraussMaffei said it had reached an agreement with the IG Metall union at its Treuchtlingen site in Germany, where it makes some machine components, that will keep the plant open. “As part of constructive and
objective negotiations, all parties have also agreed that
there will be no redundancies for operational reasons until December 31, 2015,” says Jan Siebert, CEO of the Krauss- Maffei Group. He said the Treuchtlingen
workers had, as part of the deal, agreed to extend their working week to 38 hours until September 2014 and to 37 hours between October 2014 and December 2015 with no additional payment. ❙

Mercedes lightens up its S-Class
Mercedes Benz has selected Akulon Ultraflow PA6 for production of the oil sumps used on its S-Class power unit. The new oil sump design was developed and is
manufactured by Germany-based Tier One BBP using a 35% glass fibre reinforced grade of DSM’s Akulon – Ultraflow K-FHG7. This is a heat stabilised grade of PA6 offering a combination of high resistance to engine oils and very good flow in the mould. The PA6 sump is claimed to be around 50% lighter than the metal version it replaces and is less costly to manufacture. It has passed all impact and mechani- cal requirements, including stone impact, vibration and engine drop tests. ❙

operating profits for the Technical Plastics division were also up on the period by £400,000 to £1.7m, putting the strong perfor- mance down to good growth in both its US and Indian operations. In a statement, it said it also benefited from the phasing in of new custom- er-funded tooling and development projects. The company is expand- ing its US production operation at Latrobe in Pennsylvania and expects work to be completed before the end of its financial year in April 2014. The new capacity will support a number of new medical industry projects, the company said. “The group’s traditional
businesses have produced solid results in the first half of the year and both Technical Plastics and LED Technologies are expected to enjoy a stronger second half with encouraging future growth prospects,” according to Carclo chairman Michael Derby- shire. ❙
