automotive | Update Global light vehicle sales set record

Recovering demand in the western European car market, together with strong sales in North America, Japan and Brazil, pushed global light vehicle sales for October to a record seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of 85m units/year, according to industry analysis group LMC Auto.

China plays a key part in the

result; LMC data shows the country regained record high sales of 22.4m units, up by 17.5% on a year-on-year basis. Other key Asian markets include Korea, which is running at 1.6m units/year, and Japan, where the intro- duction of higher consumption taxes in April 2014 has pushed

Mahle invests at Brazilian plant

German automotive compo- nents group Mahle has taken delivery of the 100th

Krauss-

Maffei GX injection moulding machine, which is now in operation at its Mahle Filter plant at Mogi Guaçu in São Paolo, Brazil. The GX machine range was

introduced by KraussMaffei 12 months. This 100th

model is a

standard 650 tonne GX 650-4300 model that will be used to mould engine valve covers at Mahle at a rate of 750,000 a year. The covers, which feature a valve shaft pressure lubrica-

tion channel, are a new product for the Brazilian plant. Set up in 2002, output has grown by around 20% each year since then, according to Mahle.

“Currently, over 4,000

tonnes of technical plastics are processed into engine components. In the next year, we want to increase the production volume to around 5,500 tons,” according to Everaldo Gonçalves, opera- tions manager for Mahle Filter in Brazil. ❙ www.mahle.comwww.kraussmaffei.com

Styrolution delivers in DAF’s truck cabs

DAF Trucks has selected two grades of ASA from Styrolution to produce the cabin and lower chassis panels for its XF Euro 6 model. The company worked

closely with the material supplier and Germany-based processor Takata PlasTec, which injection moulds the parts for the new truck. Two specialty ASA blends were selected for the project – Luran S 797S and Luran S KR2866C. Dinensional stability and

impact resistance were key performance requirements, as the typical 10-year truck lifecycle is longer than a

passenger car. The design team also had to ensure that the large panels in areas such as the grille would not rattle. Most of the trucks DAF supplies are produced in white so the company is using a white pigmented Luran S 797S grade with Styrolution’s SPF30 UV package. The Luran S grade, which accepts paints or clear coats, is also used for all the truck cabin and lower chassis panels. A black pigmented Luran S KR2866C grade – and ABS/PC blend – is used for the upper and lower grille mouldings. ❙ www.styrolution.com

sales to a five month high of 5.3m units/year. LMC says European light

vehicle sales have seen a second month of improving sales with the rate at October - of 13.3m units/year – the highest since the second half of 2012. North American performance remains solid, with sales running at 15.2m

units/year for the US and 1.8m units/year in Canada. South America has also

proved considerably resilient, says the analysis group. The annual light vehicle sales rate in Brazil rose 12% in October to 3.7m units/year and sales in Argentina surged to 1m units/ year. ❙ www.lmc-auto.com
