the fi nalists included some injection moulding innova- tions too, including a thermoplastic composite example in the form of the lightweight seat pan produced by Reinart for the 2013 Opel Astra OPC car. This example (which was covered in detail in the January/February edition of Injection World http://bit.ly/14P2dRf) uses a continuous glass reinforced Ultramid PA6 sheet which is formed in the mould and then overmoulded with a short glass fi bre reinforced Ultramid PA in a hybrid process. The result is a formed and highly integrated component that weighs 45% less than the original pressed steel part and requires no painting. The process for production of the integrated coolant

crossover used on the 3.5 and 3.7 litre V6 engines used by Ford in its Taurus, Flex, Edge and Explorer models also made the fi nalists. Developed by ITW Tomco and produced in a tool by Luttmann Mold in a combination of Zytel PPA and PA6 grades from DuPont, this composite component is produced in a two-step insert moulding process where individual coolant tubes are moulded in a 35% glass reinforced grade of Zytel PPA (HTN 51G35HSLR) then loaded into a second tool and overmoulded with a 30% glass reinforced Zytel PA6 to create the fi nished component. Compared to the previous design, produced by overmoulding brazed metal tubes, the part offers improved resistance to coolants, reduces weight by 450g and cuts cost by $1.00 per engine.  Winners of the 43rd
