Shades of the season

With the festive season now upon us, your clients’ thoughts will no doubt be turning to those all- important pre-party preparations.

For many, the must-have beauty treatment at the top of their Christmas wish lists is a set of show- stopping and fabulously fashionable nails.

To provide you with inspiration, we run-down the talon colour trends making their way straight off the Winter Fashion Week catwalks and into salons…

Scarlet siren

Glamorous and girlie, ravishing red is a shade often closely associated with this time of year. Perfect for those party nights out, this classic hue complements every woman and can be worn with a cacophony of fashion looks.

For Winter designers such as Chanel and Valentino decided to amp up the volume and go bright on the runway. Paying homage to the classic screen goddess styles of Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly, a pop of striking red can help to brighten even the darkest of Winter days. “Classic red is a very sexy bold colour that will go with the nudes and earthy colours out this season,” says Yvette Christy of Izabelle Hammon Ltd.

Let it shine

in silver: think lines, spikes and studs,” says Naja Rickette, West Hollywood celebrity nail artist. Indeed, leading designers Monique Lhullier and Joanna Mastroianni both used this hue within their runway presentations.

Other colour ways seen at the shows included brilliant bronzes, glistening golds and sumptuous rose gold coppery tones.

Alternatively, as the party season begins to get into full swing, why not add a touch of seasonal sparkle to help transform your clients’ nails into the ideal fashion accessory. For a subtle shimmer why not pair with a pretty nude or pastel shade or sweep on nail tips for a hint of feminine elegance.

Deeply delicious

Designers including Cynthia Rowley and Reem Acra embraced the must- have hue of the season at their showcases – oxblood. This dark and mysterious deep burgundy tone was literally seen from head to toe on models walking the runways as the colour was injected into clothing, make-up and of course, nails. If your client often verges towards the red side of lacquers why not encourage them to change gears a little and switch over to the rich oxblood shade, as it ideally mirrors the true sense of Winter perfectly.

In the nude

We often associate pretty nudes with the warmer months, but these shades are firmly here to stay for the Winter season.

“Nude nails will be a trend that never leaves the catwalks of London, Paris

or Milan because it is so versatile,” comments nail artist Trish Lomax. “A high gloss nude nail gives a classic, polished and groomed look that doesn't detract from the clothing and it just looks so clean.”

Classy and chic, this is a flattering look that can be worn by women of all ages and has the added benefit of being ideal for 24/7 wear. “Nudes offer warm tones that will go with all outfits and are work appropriate,” adds Yvette.

Remember whether your client opts for a sheer pink, delicate peach or barely-there beige; always match the shade to complement their individual skin tone.

The dark side

With the chillier days and bleaker nights, it’s time to embrace the darker shades that this time of year evokes. So bring out your client’s more daring side with dark greens, blues and purples which were sported by models at the Fashion Weeks across the globe.

Additionally, black nails were another popular trend used by designers including Fendi and BCBGMAXAZRIA. If this choice seems a little daunting why not take inspiration from the Oscar de la Renta presentation, where nail artists working backstage gave the French manicure a twist by swapping white tips for bold black.
