For over 30 years, Caronlab Australia has aimed to revolutionise the world of waxing. Now, having reached Irish shores, Irish Beauty met founder Lilliane Caron to discover the key to waxing success.
When Lilliane Caron opened her beauty salon in Victoria, Australia nearly 40 years ago, little did she know that she would become one of the world’s leading innovators in waxing products.
Today, Lilliane still owns her salon and is also the brains behind globally successful Caronlab Australia, creating, manufacturing and supplying over 150 different products, including her latest brand Waxxxpress, developing the concept of ‘express service’ in all aspects of her business philosophy.

1982 – Caronlab Australia is founded, after Lilliane Caron begins to develop waxing products to use in her own salon.
was using a strip wax that was really brittle. I became frustrated with this poor quality, so I started to formulate my own wax with my business partner,” Lilliane explains. “Then we created a brand that went into supermarkets and pharmacies, and from there we kept building on the specialist side of things.” The company is still based in the same town where it was founded in 1982, and now employs 65 staff with production, despatch, marketing and sales all under one roof.
Caronlab Australia specialise in hard wax which Lilliane believes offers a superior treatment experience for the client as well as being time-saving and highly efficient for the therapist.
“The market is changing, a lot of therapists fear using hard wax yet they really need to be using that now because people are becoming very sensitive. I don’t think they’re eating properly and put too much rubbish on their skin. Hard wax is more compromising; clients can do those things but not get the reaction they get from strip wax.”
She continues: “Because I have my own salon I’m always working with waxes so I think ‘how can I make this better?’ and ‘how can we evolve?’. People don’t want to use a hammer (to break up hard wax), it’s messy, they can cut themselves on the foil, so we developed easier ways of dispensing a wax. By working with my product I then learn what I’m looking for to go to the next step.”
2000 – Brilliance, Caronlab’s signature wax, is launched, and goes on to become Australia’s best- selling wax.
Training aims
Lilliane has also developed a unique waxing technique to accompany the products and her training aims to really educate waxing therapists to get the best out of a treatment. “[Some therapists] just slap the wax on and rip it off and it shouldn’t be like that. Ours (treatment protocol) is very simple – we don’t use oils under the wax, I try to keep it really simple and our products go a long way.
“I find that a lot of the therapists are very insecure but Caronlab wax gives you the confidence because it’s extremely user- friendly and your customer feels the difference. Also through my technique, I’ve made sure that I’m the one that carries the brunt of the service, I don’t ask my client to help me at all – they’re not contorted or asked to put their legs in the air or twist to the side; there are ways that you can make the client feel really comfortable without making them do all of those different moves.
2003 – Greg Ure is appointed CEO of Caronlab Australia.
2011 – In August, the company moves its seven locations under one roof, into 5,000 sq.m. premises in Geelong, Victoria.
