$92m was made from mobile games, while $12m was spent on social and casual games. 22 per cent of the country’s population is playing games on a tablet device, a figure that is double the findings of the previous survey back in 2010. The increase in those playing on smartphones, however, is not as dramatic – going from 38 per cent of the population to 44 per cent in 2013. Though the amount


of revenue generated from digital games has increased, the amount of money made from in-app purchases pales in comparison to that seen in Australia. Only an average of $2 was spent on these microtransactions. $1 was spent on gaming merchandise during the same timeframe.


DEDICATED HARDWARE But while the number of people playing mobile games is increasing, New Zealanders prefer to play on PC and console. 60 per cent of households have


a PC that they use to play games on, while 53 per cent use a console. This trumps the 44 per cent of consumers who use mobile. High as these figures are,


Australia’s hardware usage trumps it. 63 per cent of households use console, 47 use mobile and 26 use tablet. The percentage of households using a gaming PC is 53 per cent. The Top Ten physical games in both regions bears a striking resemblance to those in the UK. Unsurprisingly Grand Theft Auto


V topped the chart, while other members in the Top Ten include Call of Duty, Assassin’s Creed IV and The Last of Us in both Australia and New Zealand.
