MEANWHILE IN... RUSSIA
Russian gamers are increasingly playing on mobile devices and online, with free-to-play and social titles driving the growth
GAMING on smartphones and tablets is rapidly becoming a common Russian hobby, with nearly half of the country predicted to be gaming on mobile devices, rather than consoles and PC, by 2016.
YStats.com estimates
that the number of mobile gamers in Russia will grow annually to exceed 60 million – almost half of the country’s 143.5 million population – within the next two years. The online gaming
market in the country grew by over 20 per cent in 2013, with MMO being the most fruitful segment, followed by social. Payment provider Xsolla found that almost
a third (32.6 per cent) of Russian gamers currently play free-to-play games, with almost the same amount (29.7 per cent) playing social titles. SuperData Research
predicts that the Russian games
market will be worth $1.4 billion (£0.82bn) by 2015, with free-to-play online games including in-game purchases seeing the most growth.
