Chloë Grace Moretz stars in this remake of the classic 1976 horror film, which is based on the novel by Stephen King. Moretz plays Carrie White, a young girl who is bullied at school for being strange, including an infamous scene where other girls mock her in the shower for experiencing her first period. But it turns out that Carrie is indeed somewhat unusual, displaying psychic abilities. Her mother – a disturbed religious woman – responds by punishing Carrie, abusing her and locking her away as she believes her powers come from the Devil. But despite her troubled life, Carrie just wants to be liked. And she soon makes friends, even getting a date to the prom. What could go wrong?

WHY SHOULD I STOCK THIS? Direct by Kimberly Peirce, this adaptation of Carriedoes a sound job of updating the classic horror flick for the 21st Century. There are several nice modern touches, such as the aforementioned shower scene being filmed and put on YouTube, which helps to make the film feel more and in tune with how bullying has changed since the 1970s.

That being said the film opened to mixed reviews. While some critics liked the fresh take on the source material, many felt the depiction of Carrie’s powers was too super hero-like and that the flick was ultimately scare-free. In spite of these divided reviews,

Carriemade $84.8m (£51.1m) at the global Box Office, and won Favourite Horror Movie at the People’s Choice Awards.
