THE BRIT LIST: DEVELOPMENT RHIANNA PRATCHETT, GAMES WRITER

LOOK, yes, Rhianna Pratchett is the daughter of fantasy novelist Terry Pratchett. But when she herself is responsible for writing a critically acclaimed game that has sold 6m units, it’s a fact barely worth stating. Reinventing Lara Croft may be her biggest achievement yet, but Pratchett already had an impressive games industry CV, having begun life as a PC Zonejournalist before writing scripts for Codemasters’ Overlordseries, Ubisoft 2008 Prince of Persia, plus a number of other titles including Mirror’s Edge, Thief and Heavenly Sword. “Getting to help reinvent Lara Croft has to be up there as one of my favourite achievements,” Pratchett says. “Although I have a real soft spot for the Overlordgames. They were great fun to work on.”

Pratchett counts Tim Schafer, Christy Marx and Ken Levine (who

she worked with last year on BioShock Infinite) as the games developers she’s been most influenced by, while outside of games Joss Whedon and Mary Shelley are her heroes. So what’s next for Pratchett? “I’m doing a lot of screenwriting these days, so I hope to get a film into development soon,” she says. “I’m finding that writing in multiple disciplines really strengthens my creative muscles. I’m also interested in working on some inspiring indie projects. However, it’s rare for me to be approached by them, so I may have to go hunting.”

She continues: “It’s great to see a new influx of ideas from the indie scene. Hopefully that will help reinvigorate the industry’s middle ground, in particular, which seems to be waning due to not having the freedom of indie, or the budget of triple-A.”
