The perfect goodbye


Saying goodbye to loved ones is never easy but when you know they are having the send off they wanted, it is easier to let go. Jean Francis tells us about the spiritual memorial celebration of her friend, Mary Bingham.

just want the love to continue,” said Mary Bingham when she was asked about special requests for her funeral and memorial service.


Mary and her husband John were members


of a Sai Baba group – a spiritual healing group - and it was here that the couple met Jean. The group played a big part in their lives, with the three going to meetings over many years.


It was so important to Mary that a portrait of


Sai Baba – an Indian guru who claimed to be the reincarnation of Sai Baba of Shirdi – was placed on her coffin. Sathya Sai Baba started the Sathya Sai


Organisation in the 1960s to reach to people across the globe and help them find spiritual rest through healing. Following the death of her husband, Mary


stayed at their home in West Sussex, but became increasingly unwell, relying on a motorised chair. A year before she passed away, Mary – who


was known as Moomin to her 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren - moved to Devon to be closer to her family. It was here that she died and where her funeral took place. The day before Mary’s funeral, her


grandchildren gathered and, using photographs
