world, they sent him a postcard. Josh was on his travels when he went. It was his big adventure. “He had gone to Thailand, Bali and Indonesia
and was in Vietnam when the accident happened. It had always been his dream and he was living it. “So we thought that if people sent postcards
to him from wherever they went, we could upload them to the website and he would stay with people and carry on his dream journey.” Dad Jimmy has also put together a book of poems and photographs remembering his son. Called Released, the book contains many
stark, striking images for which Jimmy used Josh’s ashes in inventive, emotional ways. Taken together, it is a project of real work and a challenge to traditional, introverted expressions of grief and mourning. Jane said: “People have found our openness
in our grief quite difficult to understand. There is a real opposition to discussing death in our society; a real inability to accept and acknowledge it. “As a family, we made a decision not to
collude in this, to be open and show everyone what losing Josh meant. We wanted to keep him alive in our memories and in the memories of everyone who knew him. “And we wanted to be able to tell and show people what we did, to support them if they feel the same way in loss, to show them how it helped us.”
