The art of dying

The Dying Matters Coalition aims to break taboos around dying, death and bereavement by helping people make plans and talk more openly about end of life issues. Joe Meredith reports on how creativity can help us address our own mortality.

A

live: in the Face of Death is a powerful new exhibition of photographs capturing people living with a terminal illness, those

who have faced death and survived, and those who work within the death industry. The exhibition is by world-renowned

photographer Rankin and is his perception of death and mortality. It is on display in the Walker Art Gallery, in Liverpool. In fact, this exhibition is just one of the many

wonderful creative projects that have tackled the issues of dying, death and bereavement over the years. Since the Dying Matters coalition was founded in 2009, we have been privileged to be involved with a wealth of artistic endeavours that look at our relationship with death and challenge our preconceptions about living and dying. Back in 2012, the theme for Dying Matters

Awareness Week was “Small Actions, Big Difference”. As part of the week, Nadia Bettega photographed people from all walks of life to capture the seemingly small actions that can make a powerful difference to the quality of life for people in their final days, and those who care for them. Walking the dog, a pampering session in the bath, fresh flowers in a hospice room: these simple pleasures are framed in intimate and warm photographs. The exhibition opened at the Dray Walk

Gallery in London during Awareness Week, and later toured the country, with Dying Matters members hosting the photographs for the public, from St. Mary’s Hospice in Cumbria down to Brighton Buddhist Centre and many places in between.
