An attraction called Iron Man Experience will be the first Marvel branded attraction to be realised in a Disney theme park since the Walt Disney Company’s acquisition of the comic book company in 2009. Opening in 2016, the ride will take allow guests at Hong Kong Disneyland to “take flight on an epic adventure that pits Iron Man and our guests against the forces of evil,”according to Disney Parks and Resorts chairman Tom Staggs.

1) Mount Olympus, our WhiteWater slide tower includes Triton’s Twist (the green slide), which is the first slide in the world to have this figure-8 “flat-line loop” design. It’s part of the AquaLoop range and also includes a dropping floor AquaLaunch Capsule. Sliders stand inside the capsule at the top of the slide. Once the door to the capsule is locked, a countdown begins and then the floor at the feet of the rider drops out and they are sent down the slide at a rate of 45ft (14m) per second.

2) Dragon's Descent, our S&S tower ride, measures 200ft (61m) tall. It arrived in three separate sections, held together with large bolts. The four anchor bolts at the ride’s base are set in a 30ft x 30ft by 6ft pad that took one million pounds of concrete to complete. Although often referenced as a “Turbo Drop”, Dragon's Descent is not a drop at all. Everything works on air pressure. The cage is lifted to the top as air from the large red cylinder in the centre of the tower is forced into the four smaller yellow cylinders surrounding it. This air pushes four pistons attached to the cables holding the cage. Once at the top, the cage is locked by four brakes. The red cylinder refills with air and this time rapidly forces it into the yellow cylinders, but now at the bottom of the ride. When the brakes at the top release, the air pushes the four pistons upward in the yellow cylinders, forcing the cage downward.

3) Excalibur, our Great Coasters International wooden coaster, took 1.1 million board feet of lumber to build. That’s enough material to frame 63 average sized homes. There were 90,000 eight-inch bolts and over four tons of nails used when building Excalibur. It’s quite a ride though!

Bertazzon is also about to release a new model of bumper car, its first for some years. Named Berlin, the car supersedes the Oslo model and features Formula 1 styling and LED light effects, though the chassis is the same as previous cars. According to Michele Bertazzon, his clients (particularly showmen) are now changing their fleets of bumper cars less often – every six to eight years instead of four – however the firm is picking up business from several former customers of defunct supplier Reverchon International Design. Visit Bertazzon at IAAPA Attractions Expo in Orlando.

The US-based Ride Entertainment Group has set up a new revenue share division. The Ride Operations Group provides amusement parks and other venues with attractions as varied as carousels, Skycoasters, zip lines and rope courses – with no upfront investment required on the part of the operator.

Guests from Asia are among the fastest growing visitor segments to Ferrari World Abu Dhabi. “Asians are amongst our most lucrative visitor segments as they have a keen appreciation for iconic entertainment attractions and also tend to travel in groups,” notes FWAD sales director Bruno Wiley. The UAE theme park participated in the ITB Asia trade show last month in Singapore, where it featured as part of a pavilion promoting Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island leisure district.
