Flight Deck

Thirty-three years to the day its predecessor was introduced in 1980, a ride named The Bat will fly again at Ohio’s Kings Island this spring.

India’s first B&Mdebuts at

Adlabs Imagica The first Bolliger & Mabillard rollercoaster in India is now open at Adlabs Imagia near Mumbai. "The launch of Nitro is a big milestone for Adlabs Imagica as the park is now officially complete with all rides fully operational," notes Aarti Shetty, creative director for the park’s owner, Adlabs Entertainment. The inverted coaster is 2,800ft (855m) long.

Designed by Arrow Dynamics, the suspended coaster was custom designed for the Cincinnati park, debuting as Top Gun in 1993, and renamed Flight Deck in 2008. As from 2014, it will get a new name and colour scheme featuring orange track with two shades of charcoal for the columns and structure. Black will be the featured colour of the trains. “There was a lot of enthusiasm around this name change by our guests,” says Kings Island vice-president and general manager, Greg Scheid. “The name also fits the characteristics of the ride. Similar to a bat in flight, riders soar through the air, swooping, circling and diving unexpectedly as they enjoy this ride.” Travelling through a hilly wooden terrain, the coaster soars over the tree tops and, as the train turns a corner, the cars swing out to the side. attraction celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2013, giving its 20-millionth ride in June. It has proved a more enduring success than the original bat (also by Arrow), which operated for parts of three seasons from 1981 to 1983.

The Bat is one of 15 rollercoasters at Kings Island, which will also open a world record- breaking B&M inverted Coaster in 2014 called The Banshee.

Maurer spinner opens at Santa Cruz Beach

Boardwalk California’s Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk has introduced Undertow, its new spinning coaster from Maurer Söhne. Unlike most rollercoasters, which carry an entire trainload of riders, Undertow uses individual cars each holding four guests, sat back-to-back in pairs. The ride experience changes every time, depending on the weight and position of the passengers in the vehicle. The ride, which debuted on 19 October, takes over the location previously occupied by the Hurricane coaster from SDC.
