SHOW REVIEW

Optocore’s Maciek Janiszewski at the ‘Ultimate Network Shootout’

ExCeL saw the first public showing of the PreSonus StudioLive 16.4.2AI and 24.4.2AI digital mixing consoles. Sound quality is provided by premium Burr-Brown A/D/A converters and new DSP architecture based on the 64-bit Studio One audio engine. Robust DSP performance, direct WiFi and LAN communication, fast and intuitive workflow, an onboard FireWire s800 interface, and a tightly integrated software suite for Mac, Windows, and iOS create a streamlined working environment for both live and studio use. Also new was the PreSonus StudioLive 32.4.2AI mixer and StudioLive AI series three-way active PA loudspeakers. TC Group returned to PLASA London to showcase its recent product launches. Lab.gruppen provided this year’s main focus, with a new affordable amp range. On top of that, the flagship PLM 20000Q – incorporates Lake Processing – was also on the stand. Tannoy’s appearance was spearheaded by its passive column range VLS

Series – the first Tannoy product to incorporate FAST (Focussed Asymmetrical Shaping Technology), which helps deliver “unique acoustic performance benefits not previously seen across a full range of passive column loudspeakers”.

REWARDING INNOVATION Audio companies had a lot to celebrate on the second night of the show after being recognised in the PLASA Awards for Innovation. QSC Audio’s PLD/CXD amplifier was praised for being “an incredibly flexible amplifier”, while Flare Audio’s SB18C was described by judges as “taking the concept of reducing materials to a whole new level”. Line 6 also impressed with the simplicity of its StageScape M20d. Elsewhere, Optocore triumphed in the two-day ‘Ultimate Network Shootout’ which saw voters able to register their preference of six leading protocols – Optocore, MADI, Dante, EtherSound, CobraNet, and analogue. Pairs of systems were put up against each other with the winners going into a three-way shootout – RH Consulting’s Roland Hemming supervised the comparative sessions. While the winner of the first two rounds differed on each day, in the three-way final shootout Optocore always won, with analogue bringing up the rear. Chris Toulmin, head of events, PLASA London 2013, concluded: “The

response we’ve received to PLASA London 2013 has been overwhelmingly positive, both from visitors and exhibitors. They have embraced the new venue and also enjoyed the new features such as the AudioLab Arena, Theatre, and Interactive. The PLASA team has worked very hard to get to this point, and while we acknowledge that we have more work to do – in certain areas of the exhibition – we feel it has provided a great starting point for the future development of the show and are excited by the possibilities before us.” PLASA is set to return to ExCeL on 5-8 October 2014 with stand

rebookings already up on last year. www.plasashow.com
